2K will get you a used, oh say, 00/01 700 rmk 144.
How much sledding will you be doing this winter?
If you arn't going to be able to go much, it might be a better idea to just rent.
with 2k you will get a VERY well used sled with loads of miles.

If you had $3000 you would have a lot more optons and be able to get a way better sled. Ollie is right, you will only get the old gen chassis or maybe the early edge and with a lot of miles.

What type of rider are you? Whats the most fun thing you do on your sled? If its trail riding spend a grand, pickup a 96 XLT and pipe it. You will fave a fast torque sled thats fun and biult tough. Don't ever underestimate the XLT.

For the dependability factor... in your price range... a 2000 or newer 600/700 RMK or a 2002/03 600/700 Summit

144 or 151... look for a stock one... not a modded out one.

You will get a better condition OLDER sled than you will a NEWER one for the same money.

If you are a beginner... dont get caught up in the high perf stuff yet.

Stay away from 800's IMO.

Now is the time to buy. Look in the swap meet, www.ksl.com, craigslist in all the areas within driving distance... shipping is expensive these days so I would stick to fairly local.

C'mon guys... help this kid out!! We need all the new sledders we can get on the snow these days.

i can run 200 miles in a day

What... are you the supply crew on the Iditarod????

200 miles in a day will cost you more in gas in a month than your sled is worth.

Most people put in 30 - 60 miles in a day, IMO, depending on the conditioons..

There are some that will chime in that put in much more, but that is the exception and not the rule.

========================================================

200 miles in a day (or anything above 100 miles) would mean, to me, for a beginner, trail use.... Like I-own-you said... go with a great XLT... super reliable.

Sounds like a groomed trail rider if he is riding with family. Find a 6-700 Classic with an M-10 suspension or Xtra-12.

Oh yeah, I have averaged about 180 miles/day this past winter, high of about 218 in one day. No groomed or special trails. Plenty of powder and hill riding up to 3k feet, carrying 8 gallons of extra fuel in the back also. It is possible if you ride going straighter rather than in circles all day in a field.

The little Indy 500 and RMK 600's are great sleds also with your low dollar budget you will need something that does not puke a motor or not near as often so keep that in mind. Allot if us mountain riders exspect stuff to break and we often pay the price for performance.

Also the Yamaha Mountain Max is bullet proof I swear you can't smoke those motors they just keep going and going same with the 4 stroke yammies.

I'm currently riding a 99 RMK 700 w/141x2, 3700 miles, and it hangs in there just fine until the really steep and deep. I picked it up last fall for $1800 w/ a fresh rebuild, newer track, SLP pipe/can, cover, new spare belts, near showroom condition really. However after riding a new RMK, this one will be the wifey's sled soon :D

Like Mountainhorse said, we average about 50 miles a day in the snowies.

You can easily find a clean, really solid Gen2 for 1500-2000.

The 99 RMK 700 with a 136" track is a good starting point if you ride mountains. That's what I got for my wife a few years ago and it's a sweet sled. It won't go all the places the bigger sleds (like mine) go, but it can go really good and is super easy to maneuver, with a lot of good power. I'd be setting my sights in the 99-00 range if I were you, and be careful when buying to make sure you don't get any unwanted surprises.

Ehhhh, I dunno about that.

3 years ago I bought the 1999 700 RMK I have that had been converted to a 144" ... sled was in excellent condition, and only had 2800 miles.

I've since rode the piss out of it and have only had to do about $400 worth of maintenence on it..

Paid $2800 for it 3 years ago.

They're out there, just gotta look for em :)
