ive done this only a few times before and minutes at a time if that much, my friend told me that running it without the belt will mess up the clutch weights, is this true? i have a 1997 polaris super sport 488 fan. also i didnt rev it much higher than 4000. thanks

running without a belt is pretty much a non issue. just don't rev it up enough to engage the clutch and slam the clutch sleeves together.

I disagree. Running it at idle like this is one thing. Id never consider running it up to 4K rpm's with no belt on it.

^^?? aren't we pretty much saying the same thing? and what difference does it make if the motor is running at 1500 or 4000 as long as long as the clutches aren't engaging?

The clutch blowing apart at 1500 RPM's is one thing. When it blows at 4000 rpm's is a totally different thing, its like a bomb going off. Ever seen the damage a clutch does when it comes apart? Wish I had the pictures of the pieces of a P85 that are lodged in my buddys shop wall and rafters. Glad I wasnt there for that one.
