I know a guy who lost the 800 engine in his 2003 RMK (VES, with reverse). We can get a 700 VES fairly cheaply, sans all electronics. (Has mag still in engine). I think we need to change the ECU. Any other parts to change? Coils, regulators, resistors?

Is the 2003 800 an Escape or did you add reverse later?
All the pieces from the 03 will go on the 700 no problem. You will need a different (700) CDI and if the 800 has DET you'll need to either put a DET head on the 700 or replace the CDI harness and CDI with the non DET 700 stuff.
Pipes and carbs are the same, but you'll have to change the jetting in the carbs. Even the 800 clutch will work, but you'll probably have to change clutching.

I had the stuff pretty much in mind, but had not considered the heads issue. Your reminder about reclutching also added another cost factor we hadn't used. It might not be worth it to the owner. I will have to talk to him.
The reverse was an add-on. It took an entire new wiring harness, which I understand was a bear to change.
