Anyone having problems with stock pistons on an '07 M1000 turbo. Only 6 hours riding on new turbo install. Ring lands on both pistons broke, and lost 1 skirt (and a cylinder of course!). No sign of detonation on the piston domes. Oxygen was between 12 and 13, EGT's below 1100F. Boost around 10psi.

m1000 turbo

Copy That!

Actually your temps will fall off.....the piston will absorb some of the heat.

EDIT: Maybe not bad fuel, but just an insufficient amount of octane or Anti-knock rating

you did not say anything about your head ? M1000 has to much static compression for 10 lbs boost, need to lower compression, 112 oct. plus turbo rated gas only a must for 10 lbs, also what is your altatude that you ride, ignition timing a big issue also, you can sometimes smother deto with fuel but compression, oct.,and timing play a big role in successful turbo operation . The brand of race fuel is very important, not all race fuels are designed for blown or turbos motors.

Thanks for the info guys. I kinda' suspected that. It's actually my sons sled, so I'll pass the info on. I know he's only running 110 octane, but I can't remember what brand. Timing and head are stock. Not sure what altitude he was at either.

I have heard the stock m1000 pistons cant handle 10lbs boost or more so I replaced them with WISECO pistons before installing kit.I have had no problems with them running 12-14lbs. many days on this season already. 111 octane, track tek, (unicol). afrs we lower tho 10.5-11.5 on longer pulls.

we had piston failure very quickly ringlands burned away but did not hurt cylinders. still drove it off the mountin. put D&D 1200 kit on with specific parts for turbo application. lower compression head 10.5-1and different y-pipe fuel is very important boondockers(turbo kit) gave specific fuel reccomend but we had no access. d&d reccomended 100:1 premix inadditon to oil injection. 1200 is running well no signs of detonation. hard to hang on to.

Is anyone making a head spacer or lower compression head for the stock 1000motor yet. A 1200 kit is not an option. He put all his money into the turbo kit. He has the same fuel problem. Can't get what Boondocker recomended in Nelson.

take your cly head off and add 10 thou more squish. will solve problems and allow for less octane.
