From Parts Pit Stop in Mn. who are the cheapest guys I've dealt with:

Piston Cpl
78030007200 I 78030007300 I
$274.57 KTM 450 Piston

20Timing Chain 110T 08
78036013000
$48.54
1 KTM 450 timing chain

4Chain
94591-57122-00
$16.13 YZ450 timing chain

21Piston Assy
33D-116A0-00-00
$128.68 YZ450 Piston

The list goes on and on and on, if you are paying KTM prices for Yamaha parts you are getting ripped off. They are twice the price all day long. I love my KTM but I will never run another one as a snow bike.

What I don't get looking at some online sites, same company like wiseco charge different prices for a piston depending on a bike. I would expect some differences like one requires more material then another but there are massive swings within their product line.

Curious how many hours you were getting on your exc?

What bike did you have and what did you move to? did you get the expected results? Any regrats? What lessons did you learn?

Switched from a Freeride to a yz450 RAW snowbike. I'm hoping I made the right decision I should know in about 45 days if the snow gods deliver :eyebrows:

Would love to see some answers from people who did this as well!

Switched from 15 M8 to an 09 CRF450R with a 16 Timbersled LT

This bike did not like to start cold if it was under 20 degrees (almost every day I rode). Once running it ran and started well though.

Frustrated with that, the next season I switched to an 11 KTM 300 XC. Opposite problem. Bike started fine, even at -20 but never ran consistently through out the day.

Frustrated with that, I switched back to a 16 M8 sled the following season.

Miss the bike sometimes, but not the headaches, mods and maintenance. Would like to do another bike but won't do it without a sled in reserve. Probably would try a KTM 450/500 or 450 FX Yamaha if I do it again.

Ran a snowbike and sleds for a while then 2 years ago sold all the sleds and the family just runs snowbikes... I have tried 4 strokes and 2 strokes.... For me the 2 stroke is less maintenance overall. I have 100's of hours on yz250's and cr500's. No issues with carb heat, Lectron keeping the engine 70 degrees or higher... 1 of our bikes is permanent and one I switch back and forth. We are all die hard dirt bikers should be noted also..

Yes that sounds frustrating. My first bike was a cr500. Started and ran great because i spent all summer settling it up right thanks to the advice on this forum. I would still be riding it if my timbersled chain hadn’t destroyed the engine. Bought a yz450fx. Much easier to set up but still a fair amount of work to make it right in all conditions. Now i just change the oil. Get the right bike. Set it up right and you will still have more maintenance than a new sled but in my opinion it’s well worth it.

I switched from a wr 450 to a yz450. Lighter more power more overrev still Yamaha tough. You can really feel the 1500 rpm higher rev limiter and closer gearing.
I am looking at possibly going to a Ktm 450 Xc Just for the extra rpm , it often can maintain one gear we’re the Yamaha needs a shift . It also has less power down low and slightly more way up high with a huge spread. Less weight does not hurt either. The Yamaha definitely has a stronger mid range.Ktm is smoother. A friend has a Xc so I got enough seat time to know I like the bike a lot.
My dilemma is the Yamaha dealer is awesome great mechanics they just know there stuff. Ktm on the other hand don’t even know how to set the valves on on.
You buy it and your on your own.

Switching bikes

Lots of sleds prior, first bike set up 2010 te510 husky with '13 and '16 ts 120. Only negative vibration. Next bike 17 450fx with mototrax 120. Smother, far less vibration but, less power, less desirable transmission (510 had close 6 speed) and smaller stator. After mods I prefer the mototrax to the '16 ts. Next is 18 500exc with yeti 120. Bikes have been more maintenance/setup than sleds but, I prefer the bikes.

In hindsight, I preferred the tractor ability of the 510 vs the rev of the fx.
