After hearing about several guys in my area losing their 850 motors around 1600+ miles of mountain riding. Wondering if there are any gen4 850 guys here pushing 3-5000 miles of riding on a original stock motor?

I think it depends on the brand to some degree. I've heard some Cat and Doo guys getting 5k plus. I'm sure Poo guys have seen that as well.

Need a lot more detail on 1600 mile sleds losing motors, make model motor?

My buddy's '15 XM 800 has 4000 mtn miles, only on his second belt. Problems included fouled plugs in the back country very early on, and a failed fuel pump replaced under 4 yr warranty last season. Still seems to run like a champ!

I suspect it is overdue for a top end and clutch rebuilds but it has been super reliable by any standard.

Well this is the skidoo 850 forum.

So Im not talking about xm sleds. My xm had 1700 trouble free miles when i sold it. Had several riding friends lose their motors this month and in talking about it with others in the Truckee,Ca area there are several others who had a motor go bad at that mileage and now a new motor is being installed. I am on the fence about picking up a 2019 and adding a silber to it. That is the reason for my inquiry. Not trying to stir the pot.

My 17 threw a rod and cracked the jug at 1100 mountain miles. I asked what they think caused it and they think water. Still waiting to hear if Doo is going to warranty it.

I have had consistent success getting high mileage off from several 600 Etec Summits. Sleds ridden combination on and off trail. Many times rode hard responding to accidents, dragging back dead sleds and pulling stuck vehicles. Usually 2 belts over life of snowmobile and a new track at 5-7 thousand miles.

2009 Summit 600 - 7500 miles (motor failure last day)
2011 Summit 600 - 8300 miles (piston replacement 5000 miles on warranty)
2013 Summit 600 - 8600 miles
2015 Summit 600 - 7700 miles
2017 Summit 600 - 8700 miles (original belt)
2019 Summit 600R - 2100 miles (since 1/26)

Well, you didn't give any details, just a cryptic comment about motors going down...

Curious because we have tons of Doo riders around here, lots of new 850s running around. I haven't heard of, or seen one fail yet. Not many with those miles yet though, we only get 30-40 miles a ride. Only 17 I know of died on a rock this year, not due to miles...

This is odd timing, I saw this post earlier today then just heard one of my regular riding buddies just stuck his 17' 850 on his way out in Cooke. Seized rod bearing, has a little over 2000 miles. I ride with 3 doo 850's and this is the first real issue with any of them. Doo is putting a new short block in it for him.

So many variables to come to any clear conclusion. I know guys that have the latest 850 "mountain" sleds with all the goodies and it gets ridden on mostly trails. Their boondocking consists of a few 10 seconds pulls at a hill. Others I know ride in 2 feet a fresh all day and avoid trails. Pounding hills all day when some are wide open for 2 minutes straight. Chances are the first example with be bragging how long his motor lasts.

Friend with 17 Doo 850, riding with him a month ago it caught on fire and burned to the ground. It was under warranty (1,800 miles) and Ski Doo won’t help him as they can’t diagnose the 175 lbs of burnt rubble we drug out of the mountains. He has been a loyal Doo customer, not so much now.

Got 2000 miles on my 2018 850 G4 and it seized up. Had been boondocking all day and heading back to the truck on the trail when it happened. Bone stock. Dealer has had it for several days but not had time to tear it down to figure what extent the damage is. Anxious to hear what caused the problem. Happened 5 days before 1 year warranty expired. Lucky me!?!?

Sounds like it's worth redoing top end and bearings at 1200-1500 miles. That's what was recommended to me.

That is one season for me... It needs a rebuild every season now? It isn't just a top end if it is lower end bearings going out.

My 17' threw a rod through the case at 1100 miles. Got a whole new motor two months later under warranty. A buddy of mine had same thing happen at 2000 miles and no warranty.. Ouch

My motor seized a couple weeks ago, 2018 summit x with 2700km. Brought it to the dealer on a Tuesday, picked it up on Thursday. Replaced motor under warranty, no issues, awesome service.

I have prob 1500 miles on my 17, no trails mostly boondocking in the steep and deep. I am as hard on it as I can since I have 4 years warrantly :face-icon-small-hap, and only one belt requiring replacement and it was warrantied. I love it!
My buddies 2019 850 Poo seized solid 3 months in with 500 miles on it, but with no spare motors in stock he is stuck on a demo 800 for the remainder of the year.Keep parts in mind when you buy the first year of anything,,,,the hard to get parts aren't available right away.
