I bought a used 1996 Polaris Tran Sport a little while back. The sled ran poorly, needing the throttle to keep it going. Once it had been running for a bit (don't know if I'd call it warm or not), it wouldn't restart. Plugs were wet...seems to me that it's flooding. It has never had any engine or carb work done (as I've been told), so I'm thinking it needs a full carb job. I bought the kit, and am working on some other odds and ends (replacing broken idlers, all idler bearings, new belt, etc. . .).
I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with:
1. The little brass nipple I highlighted in the picture, on the intake side of the carb, was leaking a lot of fuel out when running? From what I read it is an overflow, and will leak if the float is stuck or if the needle and seat need to be replaced, does that sound right? Based on all diagrams, there is supposed to be an 1/8" I/D rubber hose coming off of it, but where is it supposed to run?
2. That sled came with a 141" 2.52 pitch track, which is almost impossible to find. In the event that the track needs to be replaced, do I trim the rails, or is there another alternative to fitting a similarly sized track and making it work?
3. It's the first used sled I buy...compression is 120psi on both sides, which seems fine. However, seeing as how old it is and that it needs to be reliable for my 30km (one way) ice fishing trips, I'm wondering if I should dig into the top and bottom end and do a rebuild, and/or bypass the oil pump, or anything like that. Any other equipment I should rebuild or replace components on?
I've heard that the 440 fan is a reliable engine, but any recommendations would be much appreciated; thanks in advance!
