So as im having buyers remorse set in reading about the '17's and how great they are. How much of these updates will us poor schmucks that bought a '16 be able to do?

I don't see how the 17' is that much "greater" than the 16'. If the 16' is re-geared or drivers are swapped and sled is clutched correctly there won't be that big a difference other than the running boards. It sure isn't worth the price increase.

I can tell you I am not feeling like a poor schmuck after getting some riding time on my 16. I want to regear it and get some skinny boards and it will work pretty well I think. IMO I think the aftermarket boards are better anyways just for the fact that you'll have better traction. I've ridden for the past few years with the Skinz Air frame boards and I miss the completely rigid board and the traction with the traction screws. I will live with the torn up soles on my boots.

ReGrearing?

It seems that regearing to 20/50 or 20/49 or 21/49 makes the '16 Proclimb 3" pull much better, but 8T drivers are more efficient than the 7T as well. My dilemma (for the off-season, quickly approaching) is can I get by with regearing alone staying with 7t or can I squeeze an 8T driver in without an extended chaincase?? WyoBoy claims he ran 8T on his sled with about 1/4" clearance without rubbing or problems! Seems the cost/availability of retrofitting the '17 extended chaincase to the '16s may be quite the proposition. Any constructive thoughts?

8T will fit fine with a 3". I ran an 8T with a 3" on my '13 for nearly 3000 miles and not one issue.

I think the 8t will work but the longer chaincase and 8t will work better. So it all come down to cost and ability

I wouldn't have "buyers remorse" on a 16', it's a very good sled. Once you clutch and gear it it will be very good. The only way I'd go for the 17' D&R is buy the 17' tunnel case 1/2 (about $160) and put on a belt drive. Or just run the 8-T drivers without the longer chaincase
