NWAC improvements that benefit us

At the Northwest Snow and Avalanche Workshop (NSAW) last month the team at the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) discussed some of their updates for this season.

They have grown their forecasting and field observation team to include an additional forecaster for the Mt. Baker area. I asked if they could give better information for the Schrieber's Meadow and Glacier Creek areas since the "Mt Baker" information is usually focused on the ski area. I was told that was the intention for this season.

They are updating their map of weather stations to include more Snotel sites with easy access to the data from those sites. The map is live now and looks to be a big improvement over what was previously focused around ski areas.

In addition to these updates to the website NWAC is expanding the education opportunities for us under the leadership of Jeff Hambelton. Jeff has been out to dealerships this fall to talk about avalanche awareness and will be in the snow all winter. I'll be joining him again as part of the expanded instructor team. Our schedule puts us in the snow more often with the Basic Avalanche Skills Course (BASC) for Snowmobilers and in more locations with days out with local sled clubs. Here's a link to that for more info.

Another opportunity coming up is the Beacon Rally at Mt Baker Ski Area. We can't ride our sleds there but there is really good access to some very good instructors and it's a chance to practice/fine tune your companion rescue skills.

As part of the instructor team I can help with some info so feel free to post questions here. I'm not in the office in Seattle and probably can't help with any of the office questions but there should be good contact information on the website.

I think I'll be breaking in my new sled on my first day teaching, anyone know a good snow dance?

A quick update, the Beacon Rally has been postponed tentatively until March 9, 2019. Watch for updates at mtbaker.us and NWAC.us as the season progresses.
