My husband and I took the kids to Granite Mountain Sunday for a day of backcountry snowboarding, skiing and good family fun! The kids had an absolute blast - our 11 year old got her first real backcountry snowboarding experience and our 4 year old just enjoyed running around out there. We made a nice fire at the base of the mountain to enjoy between runs. We were able to easily access this area b/c of the groomed runs that went most of the way up the mountain that are used by the backcountry skier groomer to drop off the skiers and snowboarders and then the snow wasnt too deep so we could access the very top of the bowl with the snowmobiles.

It's very easy for us snowmobilers to share such wonderful backcountry adventures like this with our families around McCall! The groomers where out dropping off skiers and boards while we were out there but it would just be too expensive for us to do this with the whole family via the guieded groomer trips - besides, there is no way I could take my 4 year old in that scenario and I want her to experience this too! Experiences like this are what shape our kids into the outgoing individuals that so many of us adults are! Start'em young! My 11 year has new great aspirations after this adventure!

If I am reading the trail map correctly those snocat trails are not supposed to be ridden by snowmobiles, but crossing is permitted. Someone local correct me if I am wrong, we are going there this weekend and I dont want to be in the wrong or PO any non-motorized peeps.
Great photos BTW!

Only the Boulevard is open to sleds

The main route up the mountain across Goose Lake from the groomed trail is open to snowmobiles. About ¾ ‘s of the way up Goose Lake, turn left, cross the lake and there is a snowcat road that goes up the west side and is called the boulevard and can be shared. When you get up close to the top there should be signs that indicate the end of the shared route. You can then cross the snocat roads but cannot go down them. Please obey the signs and ride in areas other than where they ski which is the south side of that area. We can get along, there is great riding areas up on top to the north side of the bowls there. Go down the chute to Twin Lakes and then go left up into a bowl there. You don’t know it is there unless pointed out. Great place to ride.

Sarah that is awesome! Incredible family fun.

That is exactly how I got into sledding way way way back in the day. Easy and faster access to the fun. "Earning your turns" is what people who can't afford a sled say! While they were hiking and getting two or 3 killer runs a few miles max from the car we got 20 and expanded our possibilities a million fold! Funny how now I see the same faces that we used to sit in USE meetings and argue for the right to access with are now the very same faces I see at the parking lots loading boards and skis on sleds as they head in! Hmm Pot this is the Kettle calling!

Sarah you are totally right...the national forest is there and supposed to be for us all. Irregardless of our choice of recreation!

Oh you need POV video goggles for the entire fam-dam-ily! Stills are nice...bolt on cams are a pain/hassle as you already stated....but can you imagine reviewing the fun as the years go by in live action video...right from the kids point of view tied in with Mom and Dad's?
