Crank Bearing Going Out?

On my buddies 05' 900 RMK I noticed that when you turn the primary clutch by hand you can feel a bit of roughness, similar to a bicycle (adjustable, not a sealed bearing) wheel bearing that has been over tightened. This is with the plugs out and belt off. Sled runs great currently but I know on my sled (90' Indy 500) when I do this same check its smooth as butter.
Just wondering if this is normal (I really doubt it), and if you crank guys would suggest pulling the motor and having the crank serviced (new bearings?) before disaster:eek:. Or does it sound like its too late? Any thoughts on what may have caused this (I would think lack of oil); the sled has about 1500 miles on it. Thanks for you thoughts in advance.
