Forest Plan Revision

The Sierra National Forest is one of three National Forests in California revising its Forest Plan using the new Forest Service Planning Rule. Currently the Forest is in the “Assessment Phase” - gathering existing relevant information on current forest conditions and trends, to evaluate their sustainability, and to identify the need to change the existing plan by the end of 2013. SNF has also developed a Collaboration and Communication Plan to provide clear, consistent, and easily implementable guidance for Forest staff to involve the interested public, California Native American Tribes, public agencies and elected officials in the Forest Plan revision process. Interested parties are encouraged to learn more by visiting and participating in Our Forest Place, an online community to encourage collaboration. The public can also view and comment on the Sierra National Forest’s current Topic Papers which offer a review of current trends and conditions and is located on the Living Assessment site - a wiki-based Assessment that allows individuals to help write content.

Welcome to the U. S. Forest Service Planning Rule Revision!

The 2012 planning rule for land management planning for the National Forest System was published in the Federal Register on April 9, 2012, and it became effective 30 days following the publication date on May 9, 2012.

The Forest Service has released proposed planning directives for public review and comment. These directives are the key set of agency guidance documents that direct implementation of the 2012 planning rule. The Agency’s goal is to ensure an adaptive land management planning process that is inclusive, efficient, collaborative and science-based to promote healthy, resilient, diverse and productive National Forests and Grasslands. The proposed directives will support consistent approaches to achieving the broad goals of the 2012 planning rule.

A copy of the proposed directives can be obtained at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/planningrule/directives. Please submit comments on or before April 29, 2013. See the Federal Register Notice for additional information on comment procedures.

The 2012 planning rule was developed through the most collaborative rulemaking effort in Agency history. The complete planning rule, including the preamble and rule text, along with other informational materials, is listed in the News section below.
