What kind of track speed are you getting and how???

It has been a while since I have been on my sled but recall my track speed barely being over 40 mph... I have some goodies on it and expect more track speed. How much track speed are you getting with your 800 ZX and how are you doing it (set up and mods)????

PS... I am on a 03 800 151" with a 827 BB kit, dynoport pipe, vforce 3 reeds, Team secondary...

what gearing are you running

with that extra power you might be able to move up a tooth or 2 and gain a couple MPH

wish i knew my track speed....guess ditching all my guages wasnt the smartest.

i have plenty of guages :)

ill add a jaskshaft sensor to my digatron.

21/43 is stock....not sure if going 19/43 is going to gain you anything besides bottom end?
you will need a shorter chain too i think

21/43 is stock?! Mine was 19/43 on my 01/144 800. I'm running 19-47 now, freaking tractor gears! She will still do 65-70 down the trail, but is REALLY easy on belts! But I ditched my speedo a while ago, sorry!

yes 21/43 was stock gearing on all summit 800s as far as i know up until at least 2005.

only the 600 summits came with 19/43. when i opened mine up i found 18/44.

time to make some changes there. probly 21/44.

Lots of varibles can contributes to less than perfect trackspeed....Dirty clutches, worn belt, worn clutch parts, dirty power valves, low compression and so on.

What's your peak RPM.

All of those things check out... clean, new etc... compression is high... brand new engine. I am at 8300 rpm right now and Big John said that the stock tachs are 200 rpm low so I should bump it up to 8500 on the tach to hit my REAL RPM target of 8300 rpm

You might want to verify the 800ZX's peak rpm from the factory.....I beleive the peak RPM back then was 7900 RPM.....If your exceed the peak rpm of any given motor you will lose track speed fast.

7900 + 200 = 8100 and RKT kit and the dynoport pipe hes using allow for at least an extra 300rpm i beleive.

First off it is a RKY 827 big bore that I am running which should be run around 8300 (stock was 7950 for peak hp). I am currently running around 8300 rpm on the tach...

What kind of track speed should I be expecting with this set up? Is it unrealistic to think that with a 15X151" track that I could pull 50 MPH on the steep and deep? Or should I be happy with 40 mph... I think that I should be pulling more... I wanted to compare and see if anyone is running a faster track speed than 45 mph and if so, how did they achieve that.

I think 50 mph is going to be a stretch.....i read the other day that Kelsey 800R 860 BB is is getting upper 40's to 50 in the steep and deep

i think your gearing is to low for that track man....cant hurt to pick up a couple gears and try a couple differant combinations.

Team secondary with custom "Mountain Magic" helix and spring
stock primary with 160/320 spring, I don't know how much pin weight.

Jetting is pretty good... 480 I believe... suggested is 450 by Kelsey but am scared to go that lean... cheap insurance!

Jet down! You are almost at stock jetting, it takes heat in the pipe to make power. If Kelsey suggested 450's I would go no bigger than 460's. He doesn't want you to burn down either....and has a safety margin built into his suggestion already.
gear down to 19/43. Lower gearing will allow you to shift out quicker/farther and get into a more efficient ratio when climbing.
IMO if your engine is properly tuned and clutching proper then mid 40's is typical, maybe more with the 151-2".
Add as much pin weight as you can on clicker 3-4 until it drops RPM below 8300, then take out 1g. :beer;

Thanks brew... great advice. I will do that... can't wait to get on the sled this year!

Cut all the lugs off your track! that will really help

Too many people get hung up on track speed I think. Add clutch weight until you cant hold rpm. bingo

Plugs should be nice light brown. kill it after a long pull and look

Trackspeed is important the forward momentum generated helps the sled propel itself up and over some pretty steep hills.

On steep steep slopes your tach/rpm can be pinned at the recommended rpm like it should be while the track has slowed to a Creep & Crawl in order to crest the steep hill.

The trackspeed generated at the start of a steep hill determines how your sled will crest the hill
