Default 96 580 powder special problems

This sled used to rip for what it was. Would smoke my 700 mtn cat in a powder climb. It was my buddies who has passed away and I ended up with it. The sled is carbed and is running psi pipes. On the flats down in the valley it hits 7500 max rpms. Where do these motors want to run at? this seems low I was thinking 8200ish. Now when I go up in the foothills the sled runs horrible. Pulls a hill around 6000grand. Before my buddy died this sled ran amazing. I have changed nothing since I got it. I had the sled in higher elevations in a meadow and when I would give it gas it would let the clutches engage then just die. As I started to ride lower in elevation it ran better. Allt comp gone bad? Any idea where to start with this B? Would really like to get it going for a second sled for people to ride.

Start with the basics. Clean clutches, check for broken springs, clean carbs, make sure a mouse wasn't living in the pipes.

Cleaned carbs. Primary has all brand new parts. Pipes seem clear dont sound plugged up. I was thinking its either electrical or the altitude comp is messed up.

Sled should run at 8000-8200 with a stock pipe (I do not know if different with performance pipe). With altitude compensator my 97 PS runs a 380 main. The compensator is designed to fail at a rich setting so check the plug color. A black oily color indicates a rich condition. I am not sure the jetting required for that sled with the compensator disconected but if it was my sled I would start with 250-260 mains at 5000-6000 feet and check plug color. If youir plug color is good (light to medium brown) I would concentrate on clutch problems.

Think that running without the carb boots would cause the compensator to freak out? Right now it has none and I just noticed it today. Think I might order a set

Running 410 mains. In the valley its at 4600 ft and I ride up to 10000. Think I should just can the altitude compensator and start at 250? Or keep it and still jet down and see what happens

Sled has sat for 5 years..wow. anyways my nephew wants to ride it so we started jetting it. So far wide open it rips with 270 mains. The bottom end is a dog. Its at a 75 pilot and wants more. I think something is wrong with these carbs or a possible boot leak. Anyone have an idea?
