Fuel gauge

I have a 2009 M1000. Fuel gauge just sits on the bottom of slider thing when in the tank, no matter how much fuel is in tank. It slides up and down freely. Slide it up and it just sinks to the bottom. Now if I take it out and test it in a container if water it works just fine. Any reason for that? Doesn't make any sense????

Hmm, possibly cracked float? Reacting different with gasoline vs water ? I dunno, but they do break as its a very simplistic design , I have gone through a few myself on all my M's

they are inexpensive, and easy to replace, just buy a new one. not worth the time to play with it. Ski

Float is most likely cracked and full of gas, gas is lighter than water thus it will float in water but sink in gas.
