The groove in the button is a wear indicator, but they should be replaced long before the groove is gone. They will wear on the side of the button where it seats into the cup....if you see much of a smiley face in the edge of the button I would replace them. Chamfering the edge of the aluminum to eliminate the sharp edge helps with wear also....the newer clutches are chamfered.
