I have a 2004 QC Hemi and tow a 20ft charmac. I am looking at getting a 04-06 5.9 cummins. If you tow with one, what do you tow, whats you MPG and what mods to the truck.

Thanks

If you want a real truck get the new ford 6.4 and get the super 275 chip and striaght pipe it. you will have 500+ hp and over 1100 lbs or torque. its an amzing fun ride.

I have an 01 5.9 cummins, a little different then what you want. But I have a 25 ft haulmark enclosed trailer, I would say around 12-15 mpg towing a full load pending on conditions. It has edge ez programmer and 4'' after market exhaust. 17-19 without trailer, hope this helps.

I have a 2005 cummins with the 5.9 H.O. I have changed the intake to a k&N and replaced the injectors with the 65hp Rv injectors. I only pull an open two place but I pull a 31 ft RV in the summer which weighs 8500# loaded. This truck pulls very good and the cummins likes to be worked. I have 41,000 miles on it and it has not had a warranty claim yet. I work with 3 guys with new fords and yes they do have good power but they have all 3 left them along the highway already. My mileage when empty is a true 14city, 17 highway. 12 when pulling the big trailer (checked on a calculator not the onboard computer).:D

Come on dude, we all know that "real truck" and "ford diesel" should never be used in the same sentance. Unless it goes something like this: "I was driving down the road in my Ford when i got my a$$ kicked by a real diesel." :D

BAWAWAWAWA... You got that right. Cool truck shaty motor and tranny.

Ignorance is Bliss eh?

As for the Cummins, I agree with what has already been stated. Intake, exhaust and programmer of some sort and it will pull the house down.
As far as mileage, my Auto gets better mileage than my stick.
Pulling roughly 6-7000lbs, we get around 12-13ish.
Pulling roughly 16-17000lbs, we get around 9ish.
Pulling roughly 30,000lbs, we get around 6ish.
Pulling my Flatbed unladen at 7,000lbs, I can get 13-14ish.

Head wind and frontal area will have as large of an impact on mileage as the weight you are carrying.
As bad as my Ford will stomp my Dodges in a race, you cannot replace the way a Cummins pulls!

I found a really sharp lookin 2007.5 cummins with the 6.7 in it for a pretty reasonable price. Still unsure about the motor, is the consensus on here that if you had the option to get a 2007.5 w/ the 6.7 or a 2007 w/ the 5.9 go with the 5.9? My dad has an 05 with the 5.9 and it tows great and drives smooth.

If you want mileage in a cummins, get an 03 or early release 04 with the "555" in it. The 6 speed adds to it as well. Intake, exhaust, programmer you will be around 20-21 mpg unloaded and 15-16 towing 4000 lbs. This is with 3.73 gears and 35" tires.

I have an 03 with the 305/555 combo and the auto trans. I have an Edge EZ programmer in the 70hp setting, 4" magnaflow exhaust and 285/75/17 tires. Hand calculated mileage unloaded over 70mph 18-19, 20-21 under 70 mph, under 65 mph 25-27mpg. Loaded with 8 sleds running 68-70 mph about 12-14 depending on the wind, have gotten as high as 18 with a tail wind and 4 sleds.

Are most of you guys running 35 as well. Cause if i get one, I am goin to want to do the 35s on 20s with a leveling kit. Did the 35s with the leveling kit hurt your mileage much?

That is funny, I own almost the exact same truck as this, even down to the Five inch exhaust, and it will in no way even come close to running with the Ford in a race. If it had a lift pump maybe, but there is no chance you can get enough fuel to that with the stock pumps.......

I have a 07 5.9 with a smarty programmer and streight pipe, it pulls 25,000lbs at 11MPG and never downshifts. My dad and brother both have 7.3 strokers that do not even compare to the cummins.
