Skidoo Freestyle 300 Youth Mountain Sled Build

I have 2 Freestyle 300's I'm modifying for my son (8) and daughter (10). The plan includes skis, track, tunnel mod, seat mod, handlebars and graphics.

The sleds weigh 380lbs and I am trying to keep it there or less.

I just recieved the 121 x 15 x 1.5" tracks from Tracks USA. I decided not to extend the track length due to the single cylinder 300cc motor and the rider weight is currently 65 to 80lbs. I don't think I will have to gear down, but will determine that when we get the sleds boondocking. Their top speed is about 45-49mph on groomed trails and I would hate to slow them down anymore, but off trail performance is a priority.

The skis are being upgraded to the Skidoo DS-2. I already have 1 set and another set on order. They should help keep the nose up and improve rough trail handling. The stock skis are blow-molded stiff POS's and work fine on groomed trails...nuff said.

The 300 should have no problem to spin the bigger lug (within reason of course) - I have a 125 Sno Sport spinning a 121" x 12.5" x 1.33" lug and works real well with anyone upto 100 lbs on it ... even works with some bigger kids closer to 200 lbs.

Not the fastest up the hill but it just keeps on chugging .... pity none of the OEM have kept the kids / youth in mind ... not everyone needs or should have a 600 sled first time around!

If you look a lot you can find them. There's a dealer in Kamas Utah that has one for $2800 right now. I bought one of ours for only $1200 earlier this year.

The orange skis have arrived. The orange doesn't match very well, but my son loves them just because they are orange.

Made some progress this weekend. I removed the plastic trunk, plastic taillight assembly and snowflap...totally changes the look. I need to chop about a foot off of the seat still.

Installed the new 121x15x1.5 tracks. I still had plenty of clearance in the tunnel, I could have gone with a 1.75 track easy. A useful tip on installing the driven shaft is to put a jack stand inside the track to hold it opened up so you don't have to fight the drivers getting hung up on the drive lugs or the weight of the track.

I need new hifaxes on one of the sleds, so I left that skid frame out for ease of installation, the track windows are not large enough to do it on the sled anyways.

Moved rear axle wheels inside skid

I am changing the color of the yellow sled, so I went to the dealer to buy some white colored bogey wheels and white hifax. I ended up getting a 2 wheel axle kit that moves the rear wheels inside the skid rails. It said it was for a skidoo XP, but I bought one just to see if it would work on the Freestyle's SC-4 skid...and it did. I had to move the track tensioning device to the inside of the skid rails and I cut about 1/2" off the length of the tension bolt so the head wouldn't contact the suspension at full compression.

Since they are only 121" tracks, I decided to remove the outside forward bogie wheels as well and it looks really good. If I have too much hifax wear, I may put them back on in a different color.

You can see in the pics that I used the stock yellow axle wheels because the color faces inward and you cannot see the color at all with the skid mounted in the tunnel.

The new color scheme of the yellow sled (affectionately know as Snowflake) is going to be Lime Green and White as seen on some new skidoo's this year. My daughter really likes the color, as do I, and it will be better than doing pink. I ordered the new Lime Green DS-2 skis for it, put the white hood from the Orange sled on Snowflake and put the the black hood on the Orange sled (also known as Sleigh'er). Sleigh'er (Orange sled) will be orange and black with Under Armour graphics.

I'm headed to the Spokane Snow Show this weekend and hope to find a badass rear bumper setup for both sleds.

Pretty awesome. I have enjoyed watching the progression of your builds especially with the custom 120s. Looks like these sleds will be exactly what they need until their transition to a large cc full size sled. Keep it up!

Lime Green skis

I got the new green skis for daughters sled. Same process as the orange set...I used a vice to press the aluminum rivets in that hold the ski hoop to the ski. I had to modify the rubber spacer between the ski and spindle for proper fitment.

Handguards Installed

Installed Powermadd white handguards on Snowflake and orange handguards on Sleigher. Keeping the kids warm and comfortable is a priority. Still waiting on mid-height windshield for Snowflake.

Rear Bumper Mock-up

I finally settled on using new Polaris RMK bumpers for these sleds. Since the Skidoo tunnel is wider than the Polaris tunnel, I was able to slip the stock Polaris bumper inside the Skidoo tunnel rather than the outside. My track is only 15" wide, so I don't have any clearance issues. I paid less than $50 for the bumpers...much cheaper than buying an aftermarket bumper built for the sled. The stock rear bumper works just fine, but I like the looks of this type of bumper better.

I trimmed the snowflap considerably. The stock snowflap is way to long, and I cut it in the only place possible to save the skidoo logo. It's about 3" shorter than I would like, but it will work for now. I may not be able to ride behind the kids on the trail due to the short snowflap!

Trimmed the tunnel to clean it up once the bumper placement had been finalized.

Nice build. Your gonna need to boost the h.p.. There's a Canadian firm that did a mod 300 a few years back and I think got 7 hp out of it. Ours only has 10 hours or so on it but unless the chip burn hasn't happened yet, I'd say its way under powered the the track.

LED tail lights

Installed the new LED low profile tail lights from Proven Design Products. The lights come complete with colored rivets, wire connectors and heat shrink. I used the Polaris RMK version because it had the wiring profile molded into the housing. They cost about $65 each. I used the Polaris aluminum wire cover that rivets to the tunnel.

Here is a clean looking freestyle on KSL for $2,800 in Idaho. Looks like it already has skis on it. These are awesome sleds for the kids! I geared mine down and didn't loose any top speed!!!

Tracking the kids

I finally bit the bullet and bought gps tracking devices for the kids sleds. It is the Garmin Astro 320 Dog Tracking GPS with dog collars. No, I will not have the kids wearing dog collars. I will mount the transmitters on their helmets or sleds, haven't quite decided yet. The units have a 9 mile range. In the unlikely event one of the kids gets lost or separated from me, I can locate them immediately. They both carry Rino gps 2way radios with them, so they can send me their location manually, but this allows me to track them without them having to do anything.

Graphics Done

I had the graphics printed locally and I installed them, took about 2 hours to remove the remaining old graphics and install the new ones. The kids love them, of course. Cost $75 per sled. I am impressed at the transformation graphics have on a sled.

AT this point, the sleds are ready to ride. I still need to modify the seats, but may wait till I have everything I need before I get started on them, because once I start I have to finish quickly so the sleds can be ridden. I also need to add the mountain grab bar and mount the GPS transmitters...then all will be done, but they are ready to ride right now.
