Is there a way to attach the shovel to the out side of the pack and can you get the shaft of the shovel somewere as well. O yah nice jacket.

Yes, you can put the handle inside the pack or just leave it on the shovel and the shovel blade mounts inside the buckle straps across the back. (The lower strap goes through a loop that keeps the shovel from sliding out the bottom)
