Coolant Heated handlebars

I built a set of heated bars last year and they work great. I would like to add a shutoff valve. I am running coolant from an Avid bypass thermostat, do I need a bypass valve to keep coolant flowing or can I just install an inline shutoff?

I installed a valve in the bypass line and the handle bar supply. That way when you don't want bar heat you can shut it off. Having a valve in the bypass line has two advantages, first it allows you to direct more flow through your bars and not the bypass and second when its a warm day and your bike is running hot you can restrict the bypass flow and force more fluid through your rads once the t stat has opened to help cooling. The bypass flows a surprisingly large volume of fluid if not choked down.

Thanks. That would explain why my bike runs 10* hotter in warm conditions than my buddy's bike that is identical other than mine has a thermostat and carb heater.

WARM BARS

tried the bar warmer mod, nice.

I machined bar end plugs with o rings.

This weather its nice to have some warmth in early season cold days. I also found it helpful to put my googles on top of my left hand bar to melt out fog and snow durning stops.

$20 for parts and some fun in the shop.

I have a novel source of handle bar heat using gas from old trees and dinosaurs but I cannot find any pics to post. :face-icon-small-hap

Whoa dude..... light hearted joke there.

No disrespect intended

No no, none taken, sometimes stuff just rolls off the tongue and fingers put it down.

And by the way, Sunday my pals handlebars went red hot. And the temp gauge showed 250. We stopped, checked anti freeze, my bike was 170 riding beside him. By turning on his bar flow wideopen, his KTM would run 195 and we got back to the truck on flat trail no more issues. Back at the shop we figured his squirted in gasket glue to seal his bars had gone bad and maybe plugged things up. Took apart his Thermo bob, the 90c thermostat was dead as a mouse. Dunked in boiling water it wouldn't open? Stuff happens.

Hot hands

I drilled and taped two fittings with a small hose pushed inside of the fitting running to each end of bars. The coolent then bypasses back thought the bars to the middle where my return fitting feeds back to t bob. I used O rings around the bolts to seal up my bar ends Probably the best snowbike mod yet .

we used:

aerosol can of PERMATEX THE RIGHT STUFF Black One Minute Gasket

Goes in nice because the can is under pressure and we each put maybe half a can in, most the space between the bar clamps is cold when bar ends are hot so we put in that much. Left the bar ends open and supply line holes open for 3 days before we put in anti freeze to make sure it had set up.

So far all good, I drained my anti freeze since while redoing my heat exchangers and I see no sign of any black bits of gasket material.

What are you guys running for thermostats. I have a 176 in there now and I noticed the other day that when it opens and the fluid goes through the rads the bars cool off a bit. They are at max temp right before the t stat opens. I fooled around with my bypass shut off trying to force more fluid through the bars. They are plenty hot but not burning your hands hot. I rode with super thin gloves and my hands were toasty but it was right around freezing out for temps.

Anyone know if the TrailTech in-line water temperature sensor has the 1/8 BSPP temp sensor embedded in it?

Looking to do heated bars, and wanted to use the in-line temp sensor housing as the return from the bars and then thread the 1/8 BSPP into my thermobob...

EDIT: got a response from trailtech, they do embed their 1/8 BSPP sensor. Awesome, all I need is the TTO with 19mm kit and I can get myself a gauge, sensor for tBob, and 19mm in-line hose to return coolant from my bars!

Yes, the trail tech temp sensors are 1/8 pipe thread. Might be bspp, or npt, but not enough difference in thread to matter. I've used both in a thermobob with no issues.
