This summer I want to buy a 4x4 four wheeler, 2002-2006ish. I'm going to use it around the house and for back road riding and some trails. The wife will ride it the most. What should I look for?

I just bought a 2010 holdover Honda Rancher 420es for $5400 at Carl's Cycle Sales yesterday. I doubt that is the world's record best deal but it's pretty darn good for a brand new unit with warranty. They have a couple more left plus one new white 09 for $5,200. I looked pretty far and wide at used stuff and these were new for almost the same money. They go forever and are a very very good all around basic 4x4 farm/ranch/recreation tool.

Had very good luck with the Honda Foreman Rubicons, currently have Grizzly 700 had the 660 also, this one has EPS. They are very good wheelers also, no trouble in any of them with my time and currently the 08 grizzly has 5500 miles without a thing, used primarily for farm use. Yamaha and Honda both seem to make a very reliable product.

I ride a 05 Kawasaki 650 brute force, great power, dependable but the only thing I would give it up for would be a 800 CAN-AM outlander. Way more power, An all around better machine but alot more money.

The sportsman will do everything you want it to. Easy to operate. not the most power but it doesn't sound like you are planning on mudding hard core with it. But then again i got a 99 sportsman 500 that i modded for mudding and i beat the crap out of it and it holds up to what i do to it.

My wife rides a 660 grizzley and loves it, the only thing she would trade for is a 700 with power steering. I ride a 750 brute force, the fun factor is better but not as comfy or well built. I would trade up to a can am 800 if i was in the market. just my 2 cents

If going cheaper, the Rancher is great. It has a much better 4wd than the foremans honda made (true 4wd vs the 3 wheel spin of the other). My dad has had one for 10yrs. Never changed anything other than the battery and oil. Even with the 350 it is a stout little thing that pushes a 60" plow every winter with no complaints. It is a bit tough to ride hard and fast as the suspension is a bit behind the times.

I also have a Suzuki Vinson (5 speed (10speeds with the low gear setting)) that is a great machine. Great suspension, decent 4wd, powerful motor.

Really it is hard to go wrong with wheelers these days. Other than the Bombis having a weak frame if you hit trees compared with other frame styles, they all are tough as nails.

Enjoy your pick!

I own a 08 outlander xt 800 and let me tell you once you have rode a can am you will be hooked on them. Power is not even the word for it!!! LOL
As for the weak frames just do the frame mod to it and you will be golding!!
Even the 650's are a real good buy and great machine
