Phazer Help

Need help on the grandkids 1991Phazer 2 sled. The belt is riding way to low in the secondary clutch. Was thinking about going to newer clutches on the sled that can adjust the drive belt (Sounds like you have to take the clutch apart and install shims). What are newer clutches that will work on the sled? Any help would be great the grandkids want to keep riding.

You will have to remove a spacer to get the belt to ride higher in the secondary. Are you sure the correct belt is installed and is not worn? OEM belt is Yamaha part #89X-17641-01-00. Also the belt does not ride as high in the secondary on those sleds as they do on the newer sleds so it may be alright as it is. I did own a 1991 phazer with the YPZ clutch as well as a 1993 Phazer with the YXR clutch. They both had the spacers to adjust belt tension. The belts rode a bit below the top of the secondary sheaves. The spec for belt deflection is different than what you may be used to. The manual says to measure the width of the belt and then depending on that measurement you adjust the number of spacers. If you do have to remove a spacer it is pretty simple and you don't need special tools other than snap ring pliers. Simply push down on the helix and remove the circlip on the back side of the clutch. Take it apart and the spacer is between the two sheaves. Take note of which holes the spring tabs are in so you can reinstall them where they were. It helps to have another set of hands but you can do it yourself by pushing down on the helix with your knee. If you're fortunate enough to own the proper tool to push down on the helix it's even easier.
