I bought a hawk with an rmk 700 engine in it. I was under the impression that it was a 02 engine but it has no ves so that cant be right correct? How do I tell what year it is?

There should be an engine serial number on the case on the front of the engine below the PTO cylinder. Polaris Parts fiche shows that for 2002 there was an RMK700 engine built before 3/1/01 without variable exhaust so it is possible you have a 2002 engine.

I see. So once I find this serial number how do I tell what year it is off of that? Call polaris?

0006449 is the number on the front of the case
