I am servicing my 9 tower Priamry clutch on my 03 900 1M and the manual doesn't list a spec for the spider button to sheave clearance. Does anyone know what it is? Also, the manual covers how to replace the spider buttons and rollers but the manual doesn't list any of the part numbers for them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has asked this so forgive me if i didn't find any posts related to this. The search engine on here is kind of crappy.....

Clutch

I was going thru the same thing last year, trying to rebuild the 9 tower. forget it upgrade to a 6 tower. I've seen to many 9 towers explode and do more damage to the sled than the price of a new one. Seen one take out the secondary, hood, belly pan, clutch guard & 1 pipe definately more damage than $500. Just my 0.02 cents tho.

Bushings

Notice how the weight bushing wears on a taper or is poking out more on 1 side than the other. What happens is it will walk out and cause the weight to carve a slight groove in the spider, if you catch it great. If not then she's a tow out with holes in your sled, not so great. I always err on the safe side when it comes to riding in the mountains, when in doubt throw it out ! Hope this helps. The 6 towers are a lot tougher and more efficient.

Thanks HILCLMR,

That is good to know. I just serviced my 9 tower after 1300 miles and I had one weight bushing like you described and the other 2 look ed worn but OK. The weight actully started digging into the pin. The spider and rollers look fine so I must have caught it in time. Definetly on the list of things to check more often!

this part in NOT IT. has all you need to rebuild but the pins are only 9.5 mm in dia and the kk is 10.3 mm the roler has the correct outside dia but not the inside.
still working out a return but have not had the sw'er return email.

You are correct....that part number is for '97-'98 models and the correct part number for the '99-'04 models is "1639-029". Keep in mind this is only good for the 9 tower clutches and not the 6 tower clutches used on the King Cats from '04 and on. Cat quit listing these items in the parts manual in 2001 but the same components were used in 1999-2004 on the spider assemblies for all of the 9 tower clutches. In 2004 the King Cat got the 6 tower clutch and the 1M 900 did not. Hope that clears this up.
