i think your better off buying a new post or a straight used one. the metal is already weak from bending, more so when you bend it back. i've tried to fix handle bars on my bikes in the past and they always bend again.

good luck

Mcmaster part number 8893K891

O1 tool steel rod, .8434" OD

Its not the ideal steel, but it is the perfect size to fit inside your current steering post.

I just cut my bent section out, heated my post, cooled the rod and put them together. Even with the heating / cooling it took a lot of banging.

I had a 3" riser and wanted 2", so I just took the bent 1" out of my post, welded it up, being careful not to heat base metal too much, and whamo! I've got a burly 80lb post that shouldnt break.

Next i'll be making a solid steel steering hoop I would guess, but i've got 4 good trips over the bars on this setup and its good so far!

We've tried everything as far as bent posts go. IF you want to waste the time, put a rod inside of it, gain weight, and lose the weak link, then break something more expensive next time you crash.

OR... just get a new post. They're cheap, and it affords you the chance to actually buy a better system & upgrade.

I've broken somewhere around a dozen posts, and this below has lasted longer than any other post setup I've tried, has adjustability, and gives you a weak point to break at in case of an accident. Then in a few turns of a wrench, you're back running again.

The '05 and '09 posts are quite a bit different in length.

I'm aware of that, but they will still work on the newer chassis with a different bar set up. Some guys who have wrecked their newer posts like that were looking for the older ones because they have a pivot point to give during a crash.

Also, very nice bar setup backcountryislife!

Hey Backcountryislife! where did you get that short 'T' handle post from?? Is it from a mod shop or did you make it yourself? Thanks

My pigeon SH** welding job would have been visible from the neighbor's house!!

That's a wildchild post. M7 height, T top.

btw, an 05 post WILL NOT fit in an 07+ sled. The bend in the post is there for a reason. It would be nice if it would, but that's not the case.

EDIT:

I can only say that they will not work on a 1000. I have not actually with my own hands tried to put one in an 08. Just want to be clear. (like I said... I've tried a LOT of different things. When you lack talent as strongly as I do... you need to really get innovative ;))

btw... tested that bar setup on this hit just this weekend.

Tanking off about 15 feet out of frame right & landed kinda sideways. Bars rolled forward a bit, fixed them... then went on to the next hit!

I guess I can only say that I have put the post on a 2010 chassis with the 05 tank and an M7 motor in the chassis, not the 800. But I thought I could recall guys looking for the older style post. My mistake!

I've never looked at the two tanks side by side, is the M7 tank different than the 07+ one? I assumed the issue was head clearance (heck, it barely clears the plugs as it is...) but I wonder how tank might change things as well.

Well the bent post is out of my wife's 05' CF7. I've always wanted the same setup as backcountryislife on my M8. Would my adjustable post work on the CF7? That way I could get a t-top setup for my sled.

We did it on one a few years back... but then I've heard people say that they won't fit... I'm not sure why that would be, but I've heard it from a couple people now.

I looked into the older post swap as well cause it seemed simpler to me to run a straight post, as BIL said the bent post was designed to fit the 1000 and AC standardized the parts to fit the 800 as well. Word on the street with the bend in the post the angle of the linkages as well changed so even if the straight post fits the 800 (as the 800 doesn't need the bend) the steering and such is set up to operate with whatever different specs come with the bent post. If you try it, you might be able to bolt it all in, but something will be messed up with the steering, unless you swap out everything from an M7.....I heard this all from a guy.
