EXPO/West Yellowstone - No longer Capital of the West

I am posting this thread to vent my frustration of the steady decline of West Yellowstone's SNOWEST EXPO.

First, thank you to Snowest and the West Yellowstone locals who still care about this dying event. It is appreciated.

I am from Montana and have attended EXPO since the early '90's. The last 5 years my attendance has changed from amusement/vacation to my son's racing snocross. During these past 5 years I have seen West/EXPO steadily decline (with the understanding that a certain amount it due to the economy). During that same time, Jackson Hole has done nothing but grow. Why, because it is embraced by the JH community unlike West. West has become more of a motion or exercise, not an event.

This year, no different than the last five we spent right at about $2000 at the event only to feel as if this was a hassle for some local businesses. This includes race entries, hotels, meals, fuel and gear/souvenirs. This also does not include the grandparents and family member that attend on behalf of my son.

Thursday night we arrived for registration (at the Holiday Inn and "Headquarters of EXPO"), my family of 5 ordered dinner. When my burger arrived (the 1/2 pound special for $10) it was a patty, bun, and peice of lettuce. I asked was there tomatoes, pickles, onions, etc. The response....."Tomatoes are $1 more because of fuel prices, and they are low on pickles and onions because it is the end of the season, and if I wanted mayo it was going to be extra." WOW nothing like happy to have the party come to town.

Friday night, Casino night at HI, couple of beers - oops we just are out of those flavors but we do have bud light and miller lite.

Saturday night, time for a change from the HI. Well we found 2 pizza places open. The other restaurants/bar and grills we called (as we now had a party of 16 and thought it best to make some reservations revealed more frustration. The answers we got were, NO kids, sorry no cooks for this time of year, and bar food only. Leaving us with 2 pizza joints in town that did not take reservations - we had to order it to go and eat in our race trailers - good times huh.

Sunday night - Snocross and Drags awards night. Again, family of 5 to eat at HI (after all what are our options based on Saturday night and it was the location of the awards). Still no Blue Moon beer, but this time the burger comes with even less for that same $10 price (no fries, chips or diced breakfast potatoes for the same price). And the Big Sky Chili Cheese fries that we ordered Thursday night....now half the size, with cheese and bacon bits. When asked why the order was different than Thursday night and half the size? "Because it is the end of the year and we are out of supplies"

Now, go to Jackson next weekend and see if you can find places that say "End of the season we are out", you won't. See if they have the same displeasure on there faces that you see in West. Instead it is an fun, energized environment.

So the next time that I read an article that the economy in WY is suffering because the new park restrictions on sleds....I don't think I will buy into the sympathy. In fact doubtful that I will even support the fight (CBU, BRC) for West Yellowstone. Fact is, West has done nothing for themselves but bitch about it. They have rested on their past successes as the Snowmobile Capital of the West. What a JOKE, no wonder the ISOC (formerly WPSA and WSA) bailed out on this place to hold there finale.

West Yellowstone, you have been dethroned. Next year we will make other arrangements, to not bother you. I am sure the wolf watchers will be there to support you with their Subaru's, packed lunches, and cross country skis.

Interesting take.....bummer trip though.

Maybe the reason West is dying is not so much about the locals and how they treat out-of-towners.....Snowmobiling is changing and continues to change, Jackson is an event that appeals to more and more sledders around the west....perhaps much more then the type of events held at West. IMHO if you are a mtn rider and have never been to the Jackson Hillclimb you are missing out. It is very entertaining. From the beer garden at the base of the hill to the intense hillside perspective it appeals to a larger audience here in the west as far as events go.

As long as the owners of Snow King Mtn are happy Jackson will never die!

our first year at West was with snocross (Tucker's first year running Juniors II) there was the drags, cross country and the EXPO was HUGE.. but as time came...politics, dollars, and other BS is slowly killing the event... too bad

The year Cat threw a party there was SUPER COOL!!

Jackson is very fun... but there are people in Jackson that HATE the hillclimb and (in my opinion) the event could get killed by the lefties... THAT would be a very sad day as Jackson ROCKS!!!

I couldn't have said it better. I've attended twice, both more than half dozen years ago and found the same problems....one night we ate at McRaunchies just because of the lack of selection anywhere. 3 items on the menu only, half orders, made you feel like THEY were doing us a favour......nevermind I drove down from BC with my family to race sno-x and drags(while running a booth in the EXPO)
Atleast the Polaris dealership was super friendly.....sad times but after the 2nd year we called it quits....

My dad used to tell me stories of the ovals in West and Jackson and how cool the races were in West every year....my grandpa and dad would drive 20+hrs just for one race.....the community welcomed sledders with open arms.....sad days fell on West that's for sure.

I agree, Well said! The event becomes smaller each year and the venders at the exbo are just not what they used to be.

Jackson has grown and grown with all the big name venders attending! The Jackson hill climbs are the bomb! A rockin good time! IMO!

Oh, and Just remember it is West Yellowstone Montana!!!!! Not WY. I don't know how many times I have heard that! :face-icon-small-hap

I agree West/expo is a dying event

I also have gone to the EXPO for many years. My folks, family and friends would all go and it was lots of fun. I am now the only one in my family except for a couple of cousins and their families that even snowmobile.
I love the Expo but as everyone has said it is an event that continues to decline every year. A couple years ago the manufactures paid everyones gate fee. They must have seen that it is a dying event to pay the gate fee. It used to be you could hardly walk around in the exhibits, with out banging into someone.
There are less and less Exhibitors due to cost of booths, less and less racers due to cost and none of the big name racers come out West due to bigger races back east with bigger purses.
Our sport is an expensive one and in my opinion there is nothing like snowmobiling. I hate to see the decline in such an event.
The restaurants should be more prepared for the Expo, this is a yearly event and a little better planning would be in order.
The restaurants we had dinner and breakfast where very good, it sucks that you and your family had bad experiences, and made you feel like you are a snowmobiler and we are gonna ding you for extra's which shouldn't be extras.
You pay good money for everything now a days and should get good service, after all customer service brings happy customers back.

Most of me and my buddies days at the Expo this year were out riding, awesome snow but the trails were rough. The snowmobiling industry brings a lot of revenue to West Yellowstone, If there is no more snowmobiling there West will shut down in the winter and businesses will go under.

I don't see that ever happening. The hill loves the event, the chamber loves the influx of people (has been the town's largest single weekend draw several times) and everybody loves the revenue the event brings in. They know how to cater to the spectator (wait and see what they've changed for this year). There are people who hate it, but it won't get pushed out anytime soon.

I agree with Khogan, we searched high and low for a place to have lunch other than McDonalds. Wound up eating at... McDonalds. Everywhere was closed.

It's sad to hear that such a great event has gone so down hill the last three or so years. I've gone to the Expo almost every year for the last 15 years. Have had a great time with family and friends over those years. My son went this year, said there were hardly any racers and the vendors were way down from years past. He said there were still lots of sledders in town though and should have brought the sleds this year, unlike last year. Snowest and the town of West needs to get it together or as others have said the Expo will be a event of the past. I hope someone steps it up because I've had some of the best times of my life there!

As a fellow Bozemanite and snowmobiler, I couldn't agree more. I chose to save my dinero this year and hit J-Hole. Generally tend to have a dandy time down there.

Ya.
Had similar the experience at the Hotel when we stayed there for the SnoWest Forum ride in January.

The food was REALLY POOR
The service was MEDIOCRE
The prices were HIGH

I was very surprised as a Holiday Inn is usually a pretty decent mid-range hotel.

Quite a bit of the town was shut down / boarded up during the expo, not all of it, but ALOT of it.

Had never been there during the "Glory Days", but the Jackson Hole Hill Climb ROCKS! That event is a TOTAL BLAST to be at.

I used to make a trip or two to West every season, but the group I would ride with has grown older and has lost their passion for the sport. $3.50 gasoline has put a damper on a lot of rode trips for myself and others I know. There used to be a whole lot more nightlife than we see today. It appears that good old redneck roadtrips are on the way out, I had some memorable trips to west several years ago. The Expo used to be quite an event.

We had a totally different experience this year at the expo. We arrived in Island Park at the cabin Thursday night. We rode all day Friday with the intention of hitting the expo that evening. Snow was so good we never made it. Went back to the cabin and ate a huge rib eye that we cooked on the barbie. Made plans to go to the expo Saturday afternoon. Got up and went for a morning ride but the snow was so good we decided to bag the expo and eat more steak and sit in the hot tub. Figured the expo would be around next year but the snow might not. There is so much snow in IP we could be riding on Memorial Day. Yipeee!

I am curious, if our rage should not be at our politicians? What used to be "World Expo" was a major event, and a lot of that was due to peoples ability to make it a family destination trip...

i.e. you could do the trips to the park, unfettered, un-guided, Now you can only go on certain sleds, and certain amounts daily etc.

The restaurants etc. are all merely a sign of lack of customers...more would be open if they could support themselves with paying customers...

I can only imagine what it must have been like "Back In the Day" when you could RIDE inside Yellowstone.

My dad tells me stories of that 30 years ago.

Must have been AMAZING.

Never really cared for it myself. 35 mph speed limit, slow rental people, couldn't get off trail and shred the untouched snow. I guess the geysers in winter were ok, a few elk and buffalo, woopee!

for families from midwest and back east, it was the time of their lives...and the town was more than jam packed...

for those of us who live here like Xrider above, we tend to pish posh the "normal sites" that we sadly tend to take for granted...

However for someone who has never seen an elk, buffalo, or geyser, they are pretty outstanding...and for some of those people, it was their only sledding experience...but atleast they got on a sled, and did not become anti sled...

It was very nice back in the day. To ride your own sled at your own pace and see Nature's beauty in the winter was incredible. :) To be able to stop and watch a 20 bull elk all together right off of the side of the trail 10' from ya...or the bison on the trail or off to the side...not to mention Yellowstone's own creations.

Great riding where I am right outside Glacier National Park...yet I spent a week there. Only went in the Park one day, but it was a very worthwhile experience. And yes, I do think we tend to take these things for granted.
