Default Cold Air Intake 2.0

The Turbo thread has been pretty boring here lately so I thought I'd share my masterpiece.

I've had an Aerochargered 2012 etec since about 2013. Its always worked really well. Running DJ's clutching and the engine was upgraded by SHR a couple years ago (Thanks John and crew) with a welded/trued crank (still .002 after 2 years) and better rods, duel ring pistons etc. And a little Rave valve work (big difference). Only issues I've ever had were self inflicted.

I was never a fan of how they draw air from under the hood. As an experiment I plumbed in a Koso water temp sensor into my air box because I had an extra (the super expensive tunnel Snow/Air cooled one). I was shocked to see what my intake temps were on a big climb. 175 degrees. No Bueno. Same thing would happen when tooling through the trees only to a lesser degree.

I followed a few guys on here that plumbed in a snorkel. What a difference in IATs. 170 degrees down to about 100 on the same big climb. More responsive. More power. No Rpm fade anymore.

Only issue with the snorkel was that in the really deep powder under big load, my sock would collapse. I don't have a cage, just the foam Uni filter with some windows cut out of it with a prefilter because I like to roll my sled over when I get stuck.

I fought for a long time trying to adapt part of my stock ski doo air box back under the hood so I could plumb into it and use the stock filters on either side. This turned out to be impossible with how the charge tube is routed.

Anyway my headlights have been messed up for some time so I thought I might try and build an "intake" out of them. After a lot of messing around this is what I came up with. So far, it works great. I haven't punched a stick through the Froggies yet but I can no longer see in the dark. Probably should buy a head lamp. IAT's still nice and cool but I will get a little bit of a heat soaked start sometimes. Now we just need the deep snow so i can really test it out.

Forgot to mention:

If it gets REALLY plugged up it can still draw a little bit of air from the engine compartment via the top of the console. The headlight canisters have holes drilled in the top of them.

I don't think it's going to work in deep snow. The stock intake sucks on the sides and moving it to the front has to be worse. Run a snorkel through the top. I swear I got 10-15 more HP when I did that. I give you an A for effort though! BoonDocker has an affordable one that has a wire cage you can roll over all you want.

Air intake was the worst thing about my aero charger on my 14. Tried there own snorkel kit and didn’t notice a difference and looked terrible. Then I put a BD one on it and it really wakes the sled up where it was more than noticeable. I even run one on my 18 that I have a boondocker turbo on and still notice a difference
