PJ, obviously your insurance sucked. When my hand got crushed a few years ago, I got an ambulance ride, a heli ride and the surgery for $100. Now, my insurance is not as good, but, you got screwed there. Now, that being said, you don't have an income issue and I'll leave it at that.

Hunter was born in January. Deductable not met hence the massive bill. But if you saw the $ breakdown that UCH gave us you'd crap your pants. She was there for 3 days and they charged us 3500/day for her and 5500/day for Hunter. All of the specialists (students they say) cost close to 75k. Didn't know we were paying students but hell, it's the University of Boulder, what do you expect.

Plus I'm still working on the layoff thing. There were certain bills that I negotiated down to pay a bare minimum just to stay current and now I'm paying double the normal amount (my choice) to catch up and payoff. Doesn't help that I have to drive 80 miles a day and fuel cost .50 more a gallon here than in the Front Range. Believe me, if this house would sell and make me money, I'd sell and move.

Some of the richest people wear rags and some of the poorest look like they're rich.

Big hat, no cattle!

I earned 0 dollars this last year...same as the last ten before that.

Life is about choices...make the right ones early and you will never have to work again.

Your a stay at home dad, right? This post makes it sound really different than that.

Yes, piles of cash would be nice but tell me, how do you achieve it so easily? I mean I make a pretty decent chunk and my wife pulls in close to that and I can tell that I can't pay cash for a sled. And my mortgage, well I have 160k left on that. So, other than picking 6 magic numbers on Saturday, I'm not seeing piles of cash anytime soon.

And no I don't have stacks of credit cards. Got rid of those. But what I can tell you is my medical bills are insane. Back in 09 when my son was born cost ME into the 60k range and that was after insurance. Sometimes I think the medical field is a bigger racket than insurance of all kinds.

Obviously it can be difficult with massive medical bill and other things like you have experienced in the past. The biggest way you get to accumulate cash is to reduce your monthly payments. Buying things on credit (sleds, vehicles, and other toys, credit card debt) makes it extremely difficult to accumulate wealth to get you out of the debt and increase your ability to get cash.

Long story short, it takes time, but it is easier if you don't go into debt in the first place.

I never hide what I do...like I said it is all about choices..I chose the right bride ;)

MM...seems kinda shady to not pay your whole medical bill...but force them to settle on pennies on the dollar when you don't pay up.

Yes and no. I know what your wife does for a living so I can see your point. But when 3 Vicodins in an ER cost $1000 to stop the pain in a shattered finger you tend to see the other side of the story. I'm still paying them, I haven't negotiated anything yet. And there is no way in hell one night in a birthing wing costs the hospital close to what I paid.

Tudizzle I agree MOST of the time. But credit card companies charging 25% interest after the debt is already dead I don't feel is fair. Guy can't pay even the original amount and they just pile it on. Then charge "fees" etc and the bill grows exponentially. As to medical bills that is just a complete racket. There is no deal made there. PJ has his kid in the hospital, can't negotiate anything. For a lot of reasons med bills are super inflated. The insurance company gets a better deal than if I pay cash. It's such a one sided deal I have no mercy for med bills. My first kid cost $90,000. I only had to pay about $15000 of that IIRC. Lot of money when you are just starting out. I don't want to lay out my big tale of shame but I owed massive credit card bills. Paid everyone off in full. Felt like you did, I borrowed it so I have to pay it back. I turned my business around and COULD pay it back. For a guy that could only pay $300-500 a month that debt would have never been erased. So we force people into bankruptcy. I wouldn't feel any remorse to pay back a credit card bill with NO interest or very low interest. Everybody has to do what THEY think is right or can live with.

Funny MM claims he is supporting PJ for collecting unemployment and then PJ is paying medical bills in full because MM wouldn't ever pay those in full. How the tables turn.

Sorry, wasn't clear. I paid 15, the insurance co paid ther rest. The bill got paid in full. I think it was a big deductible then 80/20 and it worked out to $15,000. I think it's a different deal when the bills are so big they crush people. I don't hate on PJ, just disagree with him on one stupid thing. Who knows maybe more but Ill find the common ground if I can.
