If we are coming in from the Midwest where would be a good place to stay with some amenities near by. We don't mind if we have to drive to a stagging erea each day as long as its not hours. Don't mind a little night life or good restaurants around.

I've been trying to get this information as well. It's looking more and more like we will stay in Sheridan and trailer each day, but I would rather be closer to the mountain than trailer 20-30 minutes, which is an educated guess. Really coming into it blind as we've always done the West Yellowstone and Island Park area.

I'm not an authority, but have stayed at the elkview couple times. As I recall Sheridan is more like an hour to the riding if the weather is good. There are links to the lodging places on the mountain in the first post. There are three places near burgess junction. Elkview is just south.

I stay in Sheridan first and last night there usually. Better options for food, gas and motel. I like the holiday inn mention your a sledder and you can get a discount. I think arrowhead is owned by someone new? I stayed at elk view one night last year we had three rooms one had not been cleaned and they didn't seem to care. Checked out next morning stayed in Sheridan for 6 nights. It's about 1.5 hour drive up in winter conditions. Savings on sled gas pays for truck fuel. I have never been stranded up top they have always let me drive down even if road is closed. Had to wait a couple of hours last year one for them to open road. Only second time in 25 years. Also gives you the options of where you want to unload. We unloaded at ranger creek a couple of days and had that area to ourselves. Granite pass is another unload and just head west. Happy trails. The chop house in Sheridan is great place to eat it's a 10.

We stayed at the elk view 2 years ago for the last time, heat didn't work, room was dirty and could have used a coat of paint. I don't enjoy driving up everyday, but if there's snow everything is going to be booked up its your only choice.

What's the Elevation in the min riding areas?

Born and raised in NE Wyoming. Ride the big horns all the time. I clutch for at least 9000ft .

We unload at about 8500-9000ft and ride up to 11,000 ft often.

Not exactly epic, but rideable in the Northern Horns above 9000ft! Still lots of obstacles but if you're careful you can get a good break-in ride. Not bad for Nov 16th. Need another good dumping of a foot plus for the tree riding safely. There are some areas without lots of Deadfall that are north-facing that you can have fun in that have a solid base from the October snow falls. Trails are not marked or groomed yet. I'm guessing that will begin soon as 14a gets closed, for now it is still open. But they are very rideable and have a good base, we broke Trail on 8 -10" inches of fresh. Most north-facing shaded slopes had a good base and we're rideable. You could pretty much ride all around in the High Country you just had to take it easy watching out for landmines. Definitely not mid-season full send mode, but if you're careful you can have a pretty good time. Another good couple of dumpings and it will be in great shape!

We rode the south side this Sunday and it was pretty good. I would say there was anywhere from 20 to 30 inches of snow most places. No base which is common for this time of year in the bighorns. A rider really needs to be very careful this early in the season.
