Working on an 03' RMK 800. I pulled the pipe and heard something rattling around. I shook the pipe and about a 10" long piece of steel tube fell out. Is this factory or did the previous owner put a stinger reducer in there and it broke loose? I never had a stock pipe on my 04' so I'm unfamiliar with them. Thanks.

Can you post picture of pipe and tube. I am thinking that this might be Aaen pipe and that tube is the internal stinger.

Definitely appears to be a stock pipe (heavy enough for OEM that's for sure) but it does seem like an internal stinger or reducer insert. Here are some pictures. I pulled the OEM heat shield off, going to repaint the pipe before it rots out, then replace heat shields.

Length is just over 11". One end tapers to 1 3/16" ID the other end is 1/8" larger. The pipe itself has a stinger OD of 2", so subtract wall thickness for ID, around 1.875" ID I'd suspect. There is a small hole in the end of the factory pipe, and a hole in the insert, maybe a tack weld once held them together through the hole? Or a rivet? Doesn't look like anything was welded, just thinking out loud.

Looks like a stock pipe not sure if there was an internal stinger but with the holes may have been. If it did i would weld it in more than one location. Might check with a locate salvage yard might have a stock pipe you could look at.

Looking at stock pipes on Ebay, it appears this was not factory. There's a stock looking pipe listed, but it says it has a $250 Bikeman pipe mod done to it. Seller didn't provide any additional info or useful pictures, so I asked him what exactly is this Bikeman pipe mod (awaiting response).

I did ride the sled last night on some roads. It ran great in the midrange, but lacked top end power (though I'm used to my etec 800 or twin piped RMK 800). I didn't have the heat shield on the stock pipe at the time, suspect that was the top end killer. I'll install the heat shields and try again next snow.

SLP singles add 8-10 horsepower and takes off noticeable weight. But you need to remove the foam under the hood and add more heat tape to keep vents and hoods from melting. They are not cheap new, and the used ones will be pretty beat up.
