Windy

Morning from Bearclaw and the Super 8 motel. Woke up at 4 am to find the wind gusting up to 45 mph. We still have strong winds in the area. The snowman is still showing a 30 % chance of snow today. The forecast for Sunday and Monday is partly cloudy skies. But for Tuesday (30%) and Wednesday (60%). Keep dancing the night away.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, wind loading remains the primary avalanche concern. There’s not much snow available for transport, but strong winds continue to form slabs in isolated areas. These slabs will be firm and stubborn, but could still fracture under the weight of a skier or rider. Be especially cognizant of wind drifted snow near ridgelines, cross-loaded gullies and rock bands.

Today, heightened avalanche conditions exist on steep wind loaded slopes which have a MODERATE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have a LOW avalanche danger.

I'm already running out of BCA 2.0 Radio's, I've ordered more. Stop in and try one out.

Don't forget to mention Snowest discount when booking a room. It will save you money.:face-icon-small-sho

Partly cloudy

Morning from Bearclaw and the Super 8 motel. The snowman is calling for partly cloudy skies today. But look out. The snow starts moving in now on Monday(30%) Tuesday(60%) and Wednesday(60%). The snow dance is working. Then Friday we have a 40% chance again. Keep up the dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Skiers in Cooke City, Hyalite, the southern Gallatin, and the Madison Range triggered collapses on wind loaded slopes, saw natural wind slabs, and avoided travel on steep, drifted slopes.
A snowbiker near Cooke City triggered a thick drift on a road cut.
Human triggered avalanches are possible today and wind loaded slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger. Avalanche danger is LOW on non-wind loaded slopes.

The Bakery had a great weekend the all the girls want to thank everyone for stopping in and having breakfast.

I to want to thank everyone coming in and purchasing items from me.

SNOW

Evening from Cooke city. It was a long day of plowing snow. The snowman gave us 10-12 inches of fresh powder overnight. Tomorrow we will see partly cloudy skies. Hang on to your sleds. The snowman has a chance of snow from Friday to Wednesday of next week. Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The avalanches were wind-loaded and broke on a weak layer of facets that formed during the cold, clear weather earlier in the month. With today’s new snow and strong wind, this layer will be under strain and triggering avalanches is likely. Avoid wind-loaded slopes. Today, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on all wind-loaded slopes and MODERATE on all others.

Six more days until Christmas.

SNOW

Morning from Bearclaw and the Super 8 motel. The snowman is calling for at least 4-5 more inches of snow tomorrow and a 40% chance of snow for the next 5 days.

Avalanche conditions: The mountains near Bozeman, Big Sky and Cooke City have a few weak layers to look out for. The main one being a layer of small grained facets buried 1-1.5’ deep. This layer has been the culprit of recent avalanche activity, mainly on wind loaded slopes.
Today, buried weak layers make human triggered avalanches possible, mainly on wind loaded slopes. For this reason the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

We rent and sell AVALANCHE PACKS, along with filling avy bottles. Don't forget to pick up a rental beacon if you're out riding in the area. Yes we do rent them along with shovels, probes, radio's and packs.

partly cloudy

Good morning from Cooke City. The town has picked up a little for the weekend. It's good to see sledders in town. Thanks for coming. Some one didn't dance Yesterday. The snowman changed his mind for today. He is calling for partly cloudy.:sun: Sunday we can see a couple of inches (60%). While Monday and Tuesday are at a (40%) chance of snow. Temp's will be in the mid 20's.
The town only picked up about 2 inches of snow yesterday.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In the mountains near Cooke City the snowpack is deeper and stronger than the other southern ranges, but it has buried weak layers and received more snow than elsewhere in the advisory area over the last week. I was riding near Cooke City the past two days and found two buried weak layers that were reactive in stability tests, and I observed widespread drifting snow yesterday. Today, human triggered avalanches are likely on steep, wind loaded slopes where fresh drifts of snow added weight to buried weak layers. Avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on non-wind loaded slopes.

Three days till Christmas, hope everyone has their shopping done.

Just a reminder that we do fill AVY bottles. The store has rentals on Avy packs, regular packs, beacons, shovels probes and yes the new 2.0 BCA radio. Every thing listed above we have in stock for sale.

The bakery will be open for Christmas and she is offering a BRUNCH till 12PM if your looking for something to eat.

When booking at the Super 8, remember to ask for the SNOWEST discount when booking a room. :face-icon-small-ton

I've looked at the snotell and what I can see, its right with the snow we've got.

lightly snowing

It's a great morning in Cooke city. The snowman hit it on the nail. We have light snow coming down. We still have a chance of snow for the next 3 days. I'm glad to see some one stepped up and started dancing. Keep up the dance and see if we can pick up at least 2 feet.
Two days until Christmas.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In the mountains near Bozeman, Big Sky and Cooke City, avalanches are possible to trigger on wind loaded slopes.Today, avalanche danger is MODERATE on wind loaded slopes and LOW elsewhere.

Hoping every one is having a good weekend.

lightly snowing

Christmas eve morning. It's another quit morning in Cooke city. I"m hoping every one has their Christmas shopping done.
It's still lightly snowing and we picked up about an inch since yesterday. Sure wasn't the 2 feet that we need. The snowman has changed the percentage today to 70%. But we lost tomorrows snow chance. Snow doesn't come back into the picture until Thursday at 30%. Lets dance all day and see what it will bring us.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The mountains near Bozeman, Big Sky and Cooke City have a 2-4’ deep and mostly stable snowpack. The exception is slopes where recent snow was drifted into thick slabs over a weak layer of facets or surface hoar buried 8-12” deep.
Avalanche danger is MODERATE on wind loaded slopes and LOW on non-wind loaded slopes.

Have a great day and I'll post again on Christmas.

Cloudy SKIES

Morning from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8 Motel. Between the snowman and Santa, we only saw 2 inches fall yesterday. I hope Santa was good to everyone,he was to us. The snowman is calling for a 70% chance of snow tonight. We could see a couple of inches. The next snowfall will be Thursday.

Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Yesterday, 2-3” fell outside Cooke City and south of Bozeman in Hyalite, while the Big Sky area only got a dusting. The snowpack in the northern Gallatin and northern Madison Ranges, and also around Cooke City, is close to 3 feet deep and generally strong and stable. For today, it is possible to trigger small wind slabs on these facets and the avalanche danger is MODERATE on wind-loaded slopes and LOW elsewhere.

Keep dancing

Chilly morning from Cooke City Mt. It was 1 above this morning. The town picked up close to 2 inches from yesterday morning. The snowman is calling for a 30% chance today. Then we can see partly cloudy skies for the next 3 days. But hang on. The snow dance must be working, because after the 3 days. We can see a chance of snow for 6 days straight. Keep up the dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Snowmobilers on Friday triggered a few small slides near Lulu Pass outside Cooke City and on Saturday. This snow is being blown into drifts and creates the possibility of triggering avalanches. For today, the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE on all wind-loaded slopes and LOW on all others.

Getting another shipment of BCA radio's (2.0) today.

Here is a line up of rental sleds that I have. 3 skidoo's, 3 polaris and 5 arctic cats. If your looking for a rental sled. Let me know what you are wanting.

We do fill avy bottles. Remember if your broke down. We carry lots of parts for all makes of sleds. We also rent out the garage to work on your sleds. You can also store your sleds over night in a heated garage.

partly cloudy

Morning from this busy little town. Over night the the town grew. Mom's Motorsports arrived with a big crew and lots of other folks showed up to ride. The snowman is calling for snow for Saturday (50%) and Sunday (80%). The six days now went down to 4 days. Some one stopped dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In the past week, the mountains around Cooke City have picked up over a foot of snow totaling more than 1.5” of SWE (snow water equivalent). This incremental load is adding stress to a layer of facets buried 1-2’ feet deep. This weak layer formed in early December and exists on all aspects and elevations. Yesterday, Doug found this layer to be reactive in stability tests near Lulu Pass. This is consistent with Alex’s observations from last week.

Slopes with wind drifted snow will be the most likely to hold unstable conditions, but non-wind loaded slopes also hold the potential to produce slides. Today, carefully evaluate the snowpack before committing to avalanche terrain and always be thinking about the consequences of triggering a slide.

Today, human triggered avalanches are possible on all steep slopes and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

SNOW

Afternoon from snowy Cooke city. Sorry for not posting yesterday. The century link phones and internet was down. It went down Thursday afternoon and didn't come up until for 24 hrs. Its strange not to have them down.
The good news is its snowing and the snowman is calling for 5-7 inches by tomorrow morning. Dance , dance, dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The snowpack around Cooke City contains multiple weak layers capable of producing avalanches. North of town, a layer of facets 1-1.5’ below the surface is the main avalanche concern. Yesterday, a snowmobiler triggered a slide on Mt Abundance that most likely failed on this layer. The slide broke 1-1.5’ feet deep, a 100’ wide and funneled into a terrain trap. Fortunately, nobody was caught. However, this slide was easily large enough to injure or bury a skier or rider.
Today, the avalanche danger will start out MODERATE, but could rise to CONSIDERABLE by this afternoon.

It's nice to see sledders up here. But bad thing is all the damages its causing because the snow is still light.
The garage is open to work on your sleds or store your sled at night. I carry most a-arms that you might need. So stop in and check out the prices.

SNOW

Good evening from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8. The snowman came through with the snow. Since last night, we picked up about 8 inches. It's still lightly snowing. After midnight well see sunny to partly cloudy skies for the next 6 days. But if we keep up the snow dance it might change like it did this weekend.
I had a report for the top of the world. Stay away. This person has road that area for 53 years and this is the worst he has ever seen it. If you have to ride it, be careful.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS:
AVALANCHE WARNING

ISSUED ON DECEMBER 30 2018 at 5:00 a.m.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center is issuing a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Lionhead area near west Yellowstone, southern Gallatin Range, southern Madison Range and the Centennial Range. New snow and strong wind are forming unstable drifts on a weak snowpack. Up to a foot of snow has fallen with more expected today. The avalanche danger is rated HIGH on all slopes. Natural and human triggered avalanches are likely. Avalanche terrain and avalanche runout zones should be avoided.

This warning will either expire or be updated by 6:00 a.m. on December 31, 2018.

Sunny

Afternoon from Cooke city. The snowman gave us much need snow the last couple of days. The mountain picked up about one and a half of snow.

We can see sunny to partly cloudy for the next 5 days. Keep up the dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The mountains near Cooke City have received 8-10” of snow over the weekend with remarkably little wind. On Sunday skiers triggered many 2-4” slabs in the new snow in Yellowstone National Park and another skier triggered a small avalanche on Woody ridge. Yesterday, a few natural slides were seen near Lulu Pass and also on the Fin.
Given the recent avalanche activity, buried weak layers, and likelihood of increasing wind-loading today, triggering avalanches is possible and the danger is rated MODERATE.

partly cloudy with light snow

Mid morning hello from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8. The snowman is calling for partly cloudy skies for 4 more days. Starting Sunday we have a chance of snow for 3 days. Help do the snow dance. Everyone need snow every where.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Around Cooke City, most of the weekend’s avalanche activity involved new or windblown snow. Yesterday, snowmobilers observed a number of small wind slab avalanches that occurred earlier in the week and highlight the continued possibility of triggering wind-loaded slopes.
For today, be wary of wind-loaded terrain and do not get onto steep slopes if there is cracking and collapsing. The avalanche danger is rated MODERATE on all slopes.

It was a good week, would like to thank everyone that came to town. If it wasn't for you, it wouldn't have been a good week. THANK YOU

Remember that we let you work on your sleds in the garage or store them over night in a heated garage.
We do carry a - arms for most sleds and other parts. Stop in and check it out.

I'm thinking about replacing a damaged ski doo, so i'm looking for a 2016 800 x with low miles, either a 154 or 165 3 inch paddle.

Sunny

Morning from Cooke city. A recap from yesterday was sunny. :sun::sun: The snowman is calling for sunny for the next two days. The chance of snow has decreased to Sunday and Monday, with a chance of snow. I need help with the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, heightened avalanche conditions exist on wind loaded slopes which have a MODERATE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have a LOW avalanche danger.

No other items to report at this time. Except we need snow.

Another sunny day

Morning from this little town that needs snow. The snowman is still calling for snow starting Sunday (50%) and going into Monday morning with a 90% chance. Tuesday and Wednesday we will see sun again.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The mountains near Cooke City have had less recent snow and wind than the rest of the area, and have a relatively stronger snowpack. Doug was in Cooke City last week and found a couple weak layers of concern, but minimal loading from snow and wind makes avalanches unlikely on these weak layers.
Minimal recent loading and no widespread buried weak layers make avalanches unlikely today and avalanche danger is LOW.

Not much more to report. Have a great weekend.

SNOW

Morning from Bearclaw and the Super 8 motel. The snowman came through with snow. It started about 8:30 am. The snowman changed his mind from 6 am. Now we have a 80% chance that we could see 4 inches by the time its all done. I'm sure every one would like to see 4 feet. :face-icon-small-hap Monday we could see another 3 inches.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: We are sad to report a snowmobiler was killed in an avalanche yesterday near Choteau, MT, outside our advisory area. :face-icon-small-sad

The mountains near Cooke City have a highly variable snowpack. Some slopes are strong, others are weak without an unstable slab on top, and some slopes are unstable.
Today, fresh drifts are possible to trigger and more likely to break where they formed over weak snow. On non-wind loaded slopes, avalanches breaking on these weak layers are unlikely. Today, avalanche danger is MODERATE on wind loaded slopes and LOW elsewhere.
