tested compression in my 08 XP with an egine tech 13.5:1 head. Is 165 lbs. too much? maybe i got a 14.5 or 15:1 head.

They say you can't tell the ratio by its compression, you would need to check the squash. I got a 13.8 : 1 and mine is 165 - 167 so I think you are good to go. :beer;

What kind of fuel do you run?
In MN I put about 3 gal. of 110 in per tank, 6,000 ft. and up straight 92.

I had 182lbs of compression in my ole moddy and ran 60/40 split on fuel--92 premium and 99LL avgas from 2000' and up and never had a issue.

did you check your stock comp. first before you changed your head? if not you should have, everyones guages are different, i have 2 different guages at home and good quality ones and they read differently, my 09 xp had 130 psi stock and with 13.5-1 et head it is now at 150psi.

I run 165 lbs comp. @ 2500-5500' with 490 mains, no deto and perfect wash.
