I have a question for you guys. What is the riding like in Pinedale? What does it compare to? I have been to the snowies, cooke, and togwotee. Is it similar to any of these?

Thanks

Pinedale

I rode just north of there last year. I'm sure the locals would know where to find the steep and deep gnarly stuff but what we rode was intermediate meadows and bowls with some decent stuck hill climb areas. We had about a 10 mile trail ride to access the areas we rode. For my abilities it was perfect and we had great snow. I'm looking to come back out 2nd week of March but go nobody to ride with. Buddies all have family obligations this year.

IMO ... Its really not like any of those places.

Basically from Pinedale you can ride the Wyoming and Salt River ranges to the west, or the Upper Green River (Continental divide snowmobile trail system ... same system as Togwotee but generally further south) are ... I really haven't ridden Togwotee pass that much in my life honestly, but I've ridden Cooke before and the Snowies quite a bit ...

There is a lot of area to ride out here, but most of what you'll typically find is the wide-open country, open meadows, big open hills, etc .... There is definatley enough tree riding around here, but you kind of have to know where it is and/or go look for it to find it. Most folks seems to stick to the open "popular" areas so to speak, but everyone has their honey holes.

Way way way more steep technical terrain than in the snowies. Way more. Similar to Cooke in that respect but probably 5x as much legally ridable area than Cooke City.

IMO, the Wyoming Range and Salt River range provide the best riding opportunity in the state. Better terrain and generally speaking not near as crowded, although it seems its getting pretty popular these days as well.

Sublette County put together some good media about it a few years ago, here ya go ... more info -

So if a person wanted to try the area it's best to take a hotel right in Pinedale?

Did some research online and the video you posted etc. Definitely looks like they welcome snowmobiles! Wondering why I never hear about Pinedale on the forums etc? Seems everyone talks about Cooke, Togwotee, and the Snowies. At least that's all the flatlanders talk about.

Its more difficult to get here (thank god) ;) ... There is no interstate in western wyoming, so thats why the vast majority of the flatlanders stay in places like the snowies, cooke, etc. Although, you do still see folks with Minnesota plates out here regularly .... an awful lot of Utah folks ride here it seems ;)

Sorry for coming into your town! From Utah and usually our snow is great but this year had to head your way a number of times along with Afton-Alpine-Island Park. For us it is California people that come into our area. It only takes me 4 hours to get to Pinedale from my house, if I didn't have kids I would live there.

I am not saying anything bad about Utah folks, don't take that that way ;) I lived in Vernal for ~6 years myself.

I'm just saying that thankfully we don't get the massive crowds here that other places get since its not as easy to get to as some of the more 'popular' places are.

For us flatlanders once you get past a 12 hour drive it's a long day add in some ice and turns to 16 pretty easily. I like extended trips hopefully I will get to ride this area next year. Drove by pinedale many times in last 10 years.

I didn't think that at all. I really wish I could live somewhere like Pinedale.

There is a little dirt showing in the parking lot and the first little bit of the trail, but that's normal for this time of year.

Snow up high is good spring condition riding. Snow tell at 91"

We had a pretty good spring snow day today to say the least. It was snowing, albeit lightly, when we left.

There's still some snow to be had out here this year .... We'll see what April brings.

https://buckrail.com/fatal-avalanche-reported-in-horse-creek/

SUBLETTE COUNTY, WYO – Tip Top Search and Rescue has been dispatched to the scene of a fatal avalanche in Horse Creek drainage of the Wyoming Range.

The avalanche was reported to have occurred this morning at an elevation of 9,153’. One snowmobiler was caught and did not survive. Information is preliminary and limited. The exact location, elevation and aspect is not yet available. Tip Top is on scene and expected to report when they know more. Avalanche specialists from the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center also plan to visit the site of this incident on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the North Fork Horse Creek drainage somewhere south of Lookout and Horse mountains and north of Prospect Peak.

Not a good way to start the season off.

With that said, if anyone is planning on being up here for the Christmas/New Years holidays, be careful .... We've seen quite a few slides in the last several weeks in most of the 'popular' spots.

Forecast today for the area was 'Moderate' ... WIth that said, still goes to show you .... be careful.

Been a rough week for snowmobiling in the State of Wyoming. Thoughts and prayers for the victims family, and prayers for the 4 riders in the Snowy's.

What are the conditions looking like so far this season around Blind Bull? We rode from Alpine a couple years back, and thought the area looked fun, but was snowing so hard could hardly even see the trail. If it works out right, might have to make a weekend trip to Pinedale next week.

Its been an interesting year. The snow pack, over all, is below average right now. The interesting thing is, its been surprisingly windy out here, so the wind has been sort of recycling the snow to lower-lying drainages and east-facing slopes. Bare in mind we've already had one avalanche fatality out here due to how wind-loaded those slopes are.

We've been finding snow, but we've had to hit it at the right time and hunt for it a bit. Right now there isn't any new snow in the forecast until the 17th and they're only calling for a 40% chance, so what we got the last couple days is probably going to be tracked up pretty bad in the popular spots by the end of this weekend.

IMO, if I was making a trip from that far away I'd probably try to time it with a higher percentage of snow in the forecast, but thats just my opinion ....

With all that said, attached pics were from today ... We thought with the snow we got the last two days that we'd finally have enough of a base to do some tree riding, turns out we were wrong. We were hung up time and time and time again on downed timber today. The snow wasn't bad, just really wasn't enough base yet to avoid logs ....
