Saw a set of SSI magnet weights for a Polaris be installed on an Axys today. The weights are advertised as 52-68 grams, depending on how many magnets are installed. There are three holes in each weight and each hole will allow up to four magnets. Several people were secretly using this type of weight a few years back on turbo Yamahas with great results. So much easier to tune than bolt or rivet style weights. I've seen Yamaha guys spin these for season after season with nothing but raving reviews, and no release of magnets.

Sad to say the experience witnessed today wasn't good with the SSI weights in an Axys. They tuned in easily but after about 20 miles of mixed trail and back country riding the SSI weights threw half a dozen magnets and nicked up brand new perfect clutches. Owner caught the problem while cleaning sled and finding magnet shrapnel all over left footwell area. Opened side panel to find nicks in brand new clutches and magnet shrapnel all over anything with steel. Owner was not happy. I witnessed install and all weights started with properly seated magnets in all holes. All four magnets from the tail position of each of the weights had let loose. Other holes had random amounts of magnets remaining. What a bad joke on the consumer. As properly installed, these hurt brand new expensive equipment. Buyers beware.

magnet install

Yes, the magnets are fragile , take care to not let them bang together when making a stack or when placing them into the holes.

The thing to remember is if you want to add magnets to a hole that already have one or more you must first remove the existing magnets using the tool provided (small allen wrench) then by holding it firmly with your fingers add it back slowly to the stack of spare magnets, never let it go. Never set one magnet down by itself, always replace a spare magnet to the magnet stack. If you ever set one down and then slid another magnet or other metal close to it (within 6 inches) they will move together so fast they will destroy each other. So to add magnets to a hole, move the stack of magnets to the hole and slide off the number magnets you want in the hole, remember to side off all the magnets required in each whole all at once. Then press them into the bottom of the hole using the tool. Flip over the stack before moving to the next hole. This is a precaution because if you move the stack to the next hole before pushing the magnets in the previous hole down to the bottom, the stack will attract the magnets you just placed. Reversing the stack polarity prevents this unexpected attraction and damage.
