I got a 06 M7 4,000+ miles. Never been touched. When should a guy do a top end? And if I'm doing a top end is it worth it to go with a big bore?

I am just about to hit 4000 on my 06 M7 and was wondering the same thing. From what I read most guys would have done the top end already. Myself, I have checked compression, looked in the cylinders and had the Y pipe off and looked at the pistons with everything looking good. So armed with that I plan on waiting one more season, then do the top end with what ever I choose at that time. Probably keep it a 700 and give it to my son and buy a new one.

Bottom line is do some tests, make an informed decision.

I would change them now and not risk a tired piston to start cracking. It would be more to replace entire top end than just pistons. BB are always worth it if you have the money and the know how to tune. :juggle::face-icon-small-coo

good TOP END

THE BEST PART about going through the top end on the layddown is cleaning and matching up the power valves, carbon build up is often a big power loser, and while you are there put in new pistons rings top end bearing. Good to go, if you have the time, at least tear down one cyl and make sure its carbon free. 4000 trail miles will be different than 4000 miles cutting sidehills.

I have seen that motor go 10k plus with nothing but fuel and oil. Check compression and if it is good spend that money on a new set of clutches. Do the new team primary and a 10.4 secondary.

I would watch and keep the clutches clean the primary is what will go first. The pistons are good tell 5k easy. Ride the piss out of it.

I pulled my TE at 6000 just to give it to a buddy. It had 115/120. I had a very new spare TE and put it on. Great motor, I've been through both the primary and secondary clutches, it's now my spare sled, bought a new 2014 in '13, love it.
