I'm looking at the "ultra-zoom" (I think they're called). Not quite the all-out DSLR, but more than the point-and-shoot. DSC-H2's the one I'm eyeballing.

If you want something ultra convienent, look at a Sony DCR-SR300 or the like. It is a digital video camera and a 6.1 MP still camera in one that doesn't use tapes. All on hard drive or you can add a memory card for the pictures. It takes great pics, I am super happy having the combo instead of carrying 2 all of the time. Attached is a pic I took with it in Yellowstone.

I have a rebel xsi...cost a little more than $500 but I'm very happy with it.
That is a highly rated camera, and is made in Japan, a rarity these days.

XSi is the good one to get, because of the SD card that it uses.

I have also been looking at Panasonic LX-3, and a Canon G10

Those are the three picks for me right now, and range from $400-650.

I am (foolishly) hoping that my LX3 will be here in a few days, but it doesnt look good. Sold out everywhere...

Veedy recommended the G10 and the Rebel XSi, too. G10 is a little bigger and the Rebel is an SLR.

Decisions, decisions!

If you want a smaller one for her to throw in purse, pocket, etc. I have been very happy with the Cannon's. Powershot or Elph series.

A couple months ago, we bought a fuji and it is not as good even though it is newer, more pixels, etc.

A few observations from using the xsi...my first DSLR.

It's light for a DSLR which is good for riding all day.

Has many "beginner" shooting modes if you're feeling lazy.

Can shoot JPEG and RAW simultaneously, JPEGs require less editing for snowest, you can do some amazing things with RAW in photoshop.

3.5 Frames per second and almost instant shutter response means you never miss a great air born shot of your buddy...even if he only got 3 feet off the ground.

Canon makes great lenses at a fair price. Pay extra for Image Stabilization, it's worth it

for about 250 i picked up a cannon power shot 570 IS and its amazing other than if you want to take some film, then it takes up almost all of your card rather quick, ive got a 2 gig card and on normal video i can get about 15 minutes but it takes some amazing pics.
but i guess its the photographer that gets the good shots, no the camera but heres a few that ive taken, the top 2 are kind of grainy but thats because they were shot using 10X digital zoom

Canon Rebel would probably be one of the best, for that amount of money. I got the Canon Rebel G, a 35 mm film camera for my photography classes. I have a Canon 40D that I got last summer, which I absolutely love...action pictures is where it shines!! If you wanna invest in anything it would be the lenses, since in the long run your lenses will last longer than your camera. Good luck!
