01' 550 Fan Opinions

I have a buddy who is cutting his teeth into snowmobiling so we found an 01 550 like new condition for $900. Wondering if this is a good deal and what are any opinions and tips with a 550?

They are known to be very reliable. You will only have 60 HP on it, so it is not going to be very fast. I have had my 550 fan cooled sled up to 60 MPH. That is fast enough in my opinion.
I would say it would be a fine sled to play with and have fun with on a limited budget. $900 sounds like a bargain.

there are lots of 600s out there that have growth potential for about $1500-2000...if he is serious about riding that is a better long term option. However, the 550 is a pretty fun little engine when set-up correctly...

550 fans are about 58 horsepower, and can go all day on the trails. They suffer greatly when the snow gets deep. You can find a '99 or newer 600 or 700 RMK in that price range. In fact, I have one! for you! Shameless plug over.
