put my 08 M8 into reverse yesterday and made a nasty/scary grind/scream/metal on metal sound when going from 4ward to reverse. Man it sounded bad, is this the start of a major problem? It worked fine for the rest of the day reverse/4ward.

I would venture to say this would probably be your diamond drive. It just could of been a tiny piece off of one of the teeth that went through it, but I would take the time to pull it out and inspect it.

I have had that happen to my M1000 as well. It didn't completely shift into reverse and made a horrible grinding noise. It wasn't much longer and the DD seized up, but that may have just been coincidence. Either way, pull it and inspect it to be safe.

Also consider installing on of these Reverse Shifters. I just installed one on my M1000 and it is fantastic. VERY positive engagement and you KNOW it is in gear. Here is a short video and some pics:

Mine's done that 3 times in the last two seasons. So far so good. Oil still looks clean and metal free. It only happens to mine if you don't let it completely idle down. Its like it doesn't completely shift into reverse. I just shut the sled off instantly, then when i restart and hit the button again its fine.
