how hard is it and what modifications should be done when putting an 05 800 into an 01, also is there something i should do to the motor mounts or anything to make the crank last longer in this engine??

Thanks!

Carb boots from the 01 need to be used so the airbox will line up correctly.

Y-pipe is the biggest challenge... the VES motor is tipped a bit different. I've seen some need to be modified, some worked.

Electrics from the 05 need to go in, CDI and harness along with the reverse button if you want to use reverse. Hood harness and gauge you might have to fiddle with if you want the DET light to work.

I'm a fan of the motor plate instead of just the 2 straps. And a good torque arm on the front left.

Make sure your clutch is in excellent condition and balanced.

I think everything Sled_Guy said it spot on. The electronics are important if you want to use the PERC and DET.

I have a 03 VES engine from an Edge sitting in my shop.
I pulled it out of my 2001 GenII chassis when I sold the chassis. (need to find a home for the engine)

Turbotater did the install...he can elaborate on all the steps he took.
