From what I'm gathering, you need a new head, cover, o-rings, and thermostat housing. Thermo housing isn't even coming up yet on the parts fiche. Retail for everything needed is over $800. Probably in the $600-700 range if you buy everything from Michelle @ Cannon Powersports. Parts won't even be available until Oct 9th or later. Funny thing is the 16/17 head is under $200 when the new 18 head is $738. Seems like Polaris is trying to steer people away from upgrading.

What about just drilling a few holes in the 16-17 stats?
Although I'm about to install a new BMP head in the next week or two, so be handy to just put the new one in if it will fit...

Ok,so my dealer just called me back after I ordered the 18 t-stat., and it won't fit in the 16-17 head. You need the 18 head for it to fit. Also the pipe bung has changed for 18, so pipes off the 16-17 Will not work.

That's interesting since the O-ring PN is the same as the 16-17 models.

Is fuel mapping the same in 18s as it is in 16/17? I was told it is pretty close to the same 100-127f as long as pipe is up to temp (can somebody please confirm?). If thermostat isn't direct drop in I am trying to see if it's worth it to drop temp down on a 16 sled. (1 hp?)

Could be better if you had an aftermarket head or a turbo cooler engine would be less likely to detonate

One of the first things I did to my Pro and my Axys was take out the thermostat and throw it in a box, never to be seen or heard from again. Temps are down in the 80's and 90's ALL day. Sled runs great (might have something to do with the shaved head, TKI gearing, SLP pipe, and Diamond S can :face-icon-small-win).

As you can tell, I wouldn't bother upgrading this part since I don't even keep it in my sleds. Save the money and just take the thing out and never look back. Just my $.02

This doesn't seem like a good move with a bypass style thermostat like on the Axys. As the T-stat opens it redirects flow from the bypass to the exchanger. With no T-stat you would have both circuits wide open all the time. You would think the greater flow would go to the shorter bypass loop? But if it's working for you I must be wrong?

I should have my MY18 t-stat later this week, so if people want to wait to order, I can test fit this on my "not in use" stock head and post what I find.

P.S. I wonder if just getting the MY18 "head cover" would work, that's where the t-stat is installed???????? The head cover is about the same price as the T-stat & seal combo.

This is interesting. Reading the comments, it sounds like Polaris might have scrapped the external T-stat? Not sure I like that.

One thing I see is the diameter has decreased significantly in the plunger. There are Pro's and Con's with this. Better for cold shock but worse for volume of coolant which doesn't help once you begin to heat up on those iced out goat trails.

I think Rich might be onto something with the head cover from a Pro but I am going to take a stab and say the coolant passages HAVE to be different with the 2018 head.

Not really sure we need to upgrade a 2016-2017 800HO.

The MY18 still has the external T-stat in the head cover and appears to be in the same spot.

USPS says my T-stat "should" be delivered on Tuesday, so we'll see them. I still find it interesting though that the o-ring/seal is still the same part number as the MY16-17. Just double checked between a MY16 800 Pro-S and a MY18 800 Pro-S and the t-stat o-ring/seal is the same part number. :face-icon-small-con :face-icon-small-con
