02 Edge 800 Mods

I have recently made some mods to my 02 Edge 800. I have replaced the stock head with a higher compression head (cant remember which, 12:1 I think), SLP intake, SLP single pipe and can, oversized crank bearing from mid west crank, engine torque arms and the big one. I extended the track from the stock 121" to a 144" with 2 inch paddles. My issue is, I have lost a lot of top end speed. I get about 80-85 mph at 8,000 rpm. Does any one have recommendations on how to re-gain this top speed.

Thanks

What is your clutch setup?

Throw more weight at it or more helix at it... see if it still pulls 8000rpm. The 800 big block pulls timing out dang fast above 8000rpm. So they will run at near 8000rpm and fool you into thinking you have them clutched right.

Throw more load at it to see if it will pull the rpm still.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I did a bit of digging, spoke to Brad at PAR and have found I have 25/40 gears. Going to change to 20/40 gears and some new clutch weights. Keep in mind I am using this sled on Michigan trails, so I'm looking for more top end than low end.

Yup, I know... throw more helix at it. If you throw a steeper helix at it, it will shift up faster and if the rpm holds it will shift further out.

You gear to 20/40 and you will be slightly lower gear than a stock RMK 144 and will be running at near sea level... I'm not sure that is the solution you want.

Report back on what your results are with that lower gearing.

And remember you went from a 121 by "small paddle" to a 144 with big paddle... it isn't going to have the top end that the 121 had.

Ok so I had a chance to test out the gears on my sled. I installed 21 top and 40 bottom I also installed 10-64 weights. both helped out a lot but I was only able to pull 80 mph at 8,000 rpm. I am looking to pull more top end on this sled, any ideas

Keep throwing weight at it til it won't pull 8000 rpm anymore. I want to say I was running 68's in mine at sealevel when I had a single pipe on it.

Is there an echo in here? :)

80mph is pretty good for that setup I would think. According to my calculations a 1-1 shift out with your gearing and drivers would be 88mph at 8000rpm.

on my 02 800 i went from 121 144 with a 1 3/4 and found that stock gearing sucks witch is 25/40 and wouldn't pull 10-68s doped the gearing to 23-40 and put 10-66's in and now it pulls like train 95 mph on the lake with that setup and using stock 04 800 switchback tss-98 (only for perc) other wise i would use a button clutch

next weekend im going to put on my slp single pipe and see where i end up im thinking ill end up back to the 10-68s

My 2004 700 switchback has 10-64 weights, i am also in Michigan. You should try 68 grams in there.

Also, check out your secondary clutchs, you might need a different helix or spring
