Why would this crack?

I recently purchased a 2016 M8000 Ltd 153. Stoked on the sled as I'm upgrading from an 09 m8. I have been going through it just to inspect and make sure everything is ready and while cleaning the clutches I discovered that the plate between the two clutches is cracked. I ordered a new one but am curious if this is a common problem, or if there is a deeper root cause that I should be looking in to? It is part #29 in the following part diagram.

Thanks for any input.

Its common.
My 14 has broke 2 in 2,300 miles.
I am looking into something better. Maybe the Ctec plate will work?

Poor design. You have too much material removed and a sharp radius where the material has been removed...this creates a stress concentration and once a crack starts, it grows fast. That is also the middle of the structure where the greatest torque forces will be seen. Plus vibration.

2017 MC and Ctec plate is the same part #. Since the 2017 used the Suzuki engine it should work on other older proclimb models. The catch is the jackshaft bearing housing is different on 2017 MC and up. Uses fewer bolts and the new plate and bearing housing is lighter overall by 3/4lb. That's according to cat specs. Waiting for mine to arrive to install.

Edit: 2014 plate is still intact at 2000 miles with my big bore. If you've broken one dig out a clutch alignment bar and make sure your engine is sitting square with the secondary.

Engine mounts were solid last yr and Clutches aligned. Only put 170 miles on since everything was checked.
Does the newer bearing housing work with the older jack shafts? I have an expensive jackshaft in the sled.

Still on my original link at 27xx miles on my '14, got a small crack in it 3-400 miles ago and I just drilled a small hole at the end of the crack. Hasn't progressed any since, we'll see how far she goes.

The clutch side bearing is the same part number for 2014 and 2018 so I don't see why it won't work. Maybe have a slightly different offset, but anytime I mess with anything on the clutch side I just expect to have to re-align things. I have a BDX Ti shaft sitting on the bench to go in along with the newer plate and housing. I'm expecting to get it and do the install sometime next week so I'll be able to tell you for sure then.

Did u take the plate off and drill the back side also?
I am sure both sides are cracked.

thinking I did have them next to each other and no way to make them mate up without the 17 up secondary backing plate

Do any of you have a picture of where this crack is located on the plate?

You've all got me thinking that I need to look as well.

I have gone threw a few. replace #5 at the same time and it will live a lot longer.

I think this mag side mount is suspect. I had the clutch side plate on my 16 crack and replaced under warranty last december. I replaced the mag mount at the same time then as it was pretty cheap and easy, and found it was destroyed. Just last month I checked that one year old mag side mount and it was destroyed again (probably 1000-1500 miles), clutch side plate is still good though. I'm thinking for less than $30 the mag side mount will be a yearly maintenance thing for me, and hopefully that makes the clutch side plate last.

Might be good to replace the bolts with that mag side mount once in a while and/or check tightness. Just found one snapped off in the block on mine the other day. 2000 miles.

How do you replace the Mag side mount, # 5 I have the mount and bracket was just wondering if there are any tips. Is it easier to change it with the bracket or change just the mount?

Super easy just undo the bolts Slide the mount out the put the mount back in and put the bolt back in

No recoil it's just one bolt it slides in and slides out super simple. Takes longer to get the tools out and the hood off. About a .010 beer job
