Lots of good info on the subject... check out the new 900 subforum and the LINKS thread.

To more directly answer your question, here is a great thread on clutching theory and gearing...

The stock chain on a 2005 900 should be long enough to go 19/42 or 19/43, whichever you prefer.

I believe the 05 is different you need a longer chain to run the 19/42

Just the opposite, on the '05s you can run 19/43 with the stock chain, on the 06s, the longest you can do is 19/42.

Either way, 19/42 can be done with the stock chain.

not to hijack the thread but quickly what pitch is the chain in a 05 900 again?

The story I heard from a friend is that the 06 chain is a 74P and the 05 chain is a 76P, the Chaincase on the 05s are supposedly a little bigger which allows for the use of the 43T bottom gear on the 05s. I am not 100% sure on this as I have not yet opened up my chaincase to see what gearing and chain mine has (I was told from the dealer that my sled is bone stock). With all that said, I posted a couple pieces of the gearing chart in the other thread with the listed 74P chain.

I hope that isn't confusing anyone, and again, I am not 100% sure in this part of the subject

This is from the '05 Polaris Deep Snow Service manual

Upon further investigation, I seem to have confused myself a little bit... further examination of the service manual has produced this find...

Now I'm confused, Why would the 05 service manual claim that a 74P chain will be required for a gear set of 19/43 if the stock chain is a 90P? Is the gearing chart representative of the EDGE chassis sleds only from that year? Why would a gear map not be published for the 05 900 sleds?

I think I'll shut up now and wait for a more educated person to answer this:eek:

The 72p chain is for the edge with different gearing, while the 90p is for the IQ....I am looking at it right now.

Any body running 19/42 gears if so are you running a stock chain.

I think 19/43 is the best gearing and most run in the 05 900 not sure if you need a larger chain though.
19/42 is best for the 06 900 because you can also use the stock chain.

05's have a longer chain than 06's and up

most guys use 18-40 with a stock chain on the 05's

most guys use 19-42 with a stock chain on the 06's

This chart is for the Edge chassis and not the IQ chassis. The 05 Deep snow manual has info for both chassis. Your 05 900 will have the 90P chain.
