I do not know if the 800 MC is electronicaly set up similar to my 97 PS 580 but when my tach quit working it was from the lighting coil going out in the stator. Check to see if your lights work. If not I would suspect the stator.

It could also be your voltage regulator. It is located on the footrest on the mag side in between it and the belly pan. There are also two boxes that provide power for the exhaust valves in the same area, they are black, the chassis voltage regulator is unpainted aluminum. You can check by unplugging it and see if your lights work. Don't rev the engine with it unhooked or you will get too much voltage and blow all the light bulbs.
