hello everyone
i wanted to gear down a 98 summit 583 that i am picking up tomorrow as i found out that it is geared very high with a 1.95 ratio. would like to install 18/41 hyvo gears and chain, would i need to adjust the clutching at all after gearing down? i read somewhere with drastic changes in gearing (1.95 to 2.27) that the motor might rev to high. i would also like to know if the 583 makes enough low end to spin the track if i lower the engagment to 3500-4000.

Hello, What track size to you have and what kind of riding are you gonna be doing?

Not exactly sure about the S chassis gearing in a 583 sled but I beleive my 97 670 summit w/ 136 track was factory geared at 20/45 when I got the sled it was spinning a 151x2x15 track , when I installed a 153x15x2.25 we dropped it to 19/45 and turned that track with easy, now clutch engagement was around 4000 and sled ran awesome.

If your not worried about high top end speed the lower gearing performs really well and still will haul at speed on the trail and have plenty of lowend snap on the bottom. we did all this on my sled and never changed the clutchin to what it was it wasn`t stock but did a bunch of track size changing and gearing changes and didn`t seem we needed to play much with the clutching, but any sled can usually be improved with better clutching that actually is the first and best mod you can do to any sled.

My 04 Rev Summit X 800ho when I got it was turning a 144x16x2 track and was set up really low geared at 19/47 and I have not changed that yet and have swapped to a 159x15x2 1/8 and turns with no real noticeable difference in power just awesome traction and floatation now. and I can still do some awesome speeds, I don`t have a speedo on this sled but I have went faster on this sled than Any other sled I have ever owned. faster than I really need to be goin..

Good Luck, Wildcard

Actually if you lower the gearing you will likely lose some RPM. Clutches are load sensing and lower gears allow them to upshift farther/faster.
How does it work with the 1.95 gearing?....as said, depending on your altitude, track, riding style etc...you may be just fine with the existing ratio.

thank you for the replies. the sled has the stock 136"/1.75" track. i like to do a lot of hillclimbing, sidehilling, and going through the trees, don't need to go any faster than 65. has 22/43 gearing in it now. would like to go as low as possible for a top speed of about 65 mph, would 18/44 work with this short of a track? has 9 tooth drivers. have not rode it yet winterbrew just figured on getting it set up for winter. 4000-7000 feet elevation.

Can you just go smaller on the top gear and keep the same chain?....19 or 20? I would ride it first for sure....then you know for sure what effect the change had. 1.95 is (IMO) low enough for the 136.

i'm not sure about going lower up top and keeping the same chain. if 1.95 is low enough then i guess i should ride it first than gear down if is not low enough. thank you for the help.

sorry about the double post but rode the sled today. you were right winterbrew the gearing works just fine, the sled pulls like a train off the bottom end! plenty of torque.

I had an F2000 580 that started life as a Grand Touring, but was a Summit by the time I was done with it. (should be exactly same gearcase as the S chassis) The Grand Touring had real tall gears, and I just dropped the upper gear to a 19, and kept the stock lower I think. I think I was down to about 2.44/1 ??? Possibly even 2.66 on the outside... It was a dozen+_ yrs ago...

It was quite a bit more than 2.25 tho - I know that for sure.

For the 136 at sea level it was pretty short gears, but the motor didn't hafta work anymore! If you would be running higher up - those gears might be even better. It went fast enough for me. If I was into speed I would have bought a Mach.
