I think the biggest thing that brings my economic # "down" as it were is that I take a realist approach to medicine. As much as I might like it if we had country doctors who could make house calls & be supported from vegetables from our gardens, I know that ain't gonna happen. So that is the one instance I think the government should step in & take over the industry completely. Big medicine companies are the reason americans pay 3 to 5 times as much on healthcare than the rest of the developed world & get less for every dollar spent. Though the government is probably largely responsible for that too.

I had my wife go through these questions too. A lot of the stuff & my stance on it is entirely hypothetical because of the gridlock that is our government.

Thanks WMS for making us think a little.

Interested questions indeed. Some of them I struggle with because my answer is often "both" ....which these tests never support, so I end up just going down the middle. Such as should healthcare be private or public, should education be private or public. I see advantages to both, and believe there is room/need for 2 (or more) parallel, yet different systems.

Also on financial regulation questions....on the macro or local level, I'm a total capitalist. However, on the national/international scale I just can't subscribe to it much due to large corporation entanglement/influence on government and the regulations/laws themselves. Clear water turns murky with a little mud.

There's a lot of stuff the government "should" be involved in ideally....but can't in its current state of mass inefficiency. So I get all screwed up on if I'm answering how I truly feel....or with a correction factor for how much government sucks vs how much it shouldn't suck.

This is a very challanging thing and why its key to just go through it almost hastily and answer with your gut feeling on it. Find out what your gut feeling is.

Its very challanging to sort out the utopian idea of something vs the reality of it and make a clear choice.

Logically speaking the 100 -100 and -100 100 are the only two logically 'pure' choices representing no conflicts and overlaps of theory. Anything in the middle means an concept or idea of gov't involvement is only applied to a particular application but not others.

It takes a lot of time and self examination to continue to work on your own opinion and refine it based on logic. Many of our knee jerk reactions are VERY far off from the proper thing to do.

I guess I'm a centrist today.

I guess I support the balance of economic and cultural freedoms moderated with state-imposed restrictions on both. And I apparently oppose political changes that would shift society away from such a paradigm.

Advocates of centrism espouse moderate political views or policies while rejecting extreme or radical views as impractical or idealistic. most Centrist borrow what they see as good ideas from across the political spectrum, often melting them together. most support market-based solutions to social problems with strong governmental oversight in the public interest.

Huh. Interesting. I guess I can see that in myself. I tend to be a moderate most of the time, not driving to far left or right.

Looking to a powerful centralized government to control the people should land you on the liberal side of things. It is a major problem in our country today I believe. People are getting complacent and do not appreciate the freedoms such a system has taken from us. Leads to socialism then communism, which IMO never works and would be an epic mistake for this country to make.

It's gotten to the point where the government needs oversight, not the private sector.
Our wallets are the oversight of the private sector.

I think looking to the govt for oversight is a mistake personally. When was the last time we the people truly were able to hold our govt accountable for it's actions? I mean, I keep voting and yet we keep digging the hole deeper it seems.

The flip side obviously is allowing people freedom of choice and burdening them with the responsibility for those choices. I do get the side that doesn't trust the private sector, I really do but, I seriously doubt govt oversight is the answer. What has the govt ever done well?
