Mapping apps for sledding - what do you use?

B
Hi all,

What is everybody using for mapping apps/regional info when out sledding? What do you like/dislike about your favourite picks? Do you think the market is missing something? What features are important?

Thanks!

Avenza Maps for your phone, with a geopdf is free, and pretty handy if you don't have a gps.

We run BCN Pro and the Avenza, pre downloaded maps on both. The Avenza is nice because it shows your location overlayed to local trail map but the contour detail isn't very good. I run the BCN pro for the clear contour maps and satellite images.

I use Gaia on my phone for maps and tracking my location. I've also used the Polaris app which is nice for off road trails. When I'm planning at home I use caltopo.com and hillmap.com, especially for slope angle shading to find the lowest angle routes to play areas and also to know where the avalanche terrain is.

Polaris GPS navigation is interesting.

I typically download the map on my Android phone. And try to have a hard copy on my person with an old fashioned compass.

I have a USB charger in the glovebox

DonBrown - where do you sled primarily? What do you like/dislike about the Polaris app? Is there enough trail data? Do you find the base map helpful for navigation off-trail (assuming mountain sledding)?

Here is the 180 degree answer.

If you want to MAP OUT where you WENT (NOT where you ARE or are GOING) but want a KILLER APP to show you the history of your ride.

Go download RELIVE

I started using this last year. I put my phone in airplane mode and I turn it on on my phone at the trailer. Then use the app to take some pics during the ride.
You have to use the app not just your phone camera. It will geotag the pic and add it in on the route when you get done. It will also look for others that are using the app and combine their info with yours when you complete it.

You can only add 10 pictures to the track but you can pick which one you want to add.

It is pretty cool to see exactly where you went during the day.
