1995 Formula Z recoil swap

I Purchased a '95 Formula Z for the kids to ding around on and found that it is next to impossible to pull over to start. I purchased a recoil & mounting flange from a 1998 (the larger band style) and went to install it on the '95 and notice that the front engine plate is in the way. It looks like I'll need to cut a notch into it near the bolt hole that mounts the plate to the sled so I can mount the new recoil. Has anyone done this modification? Will cutting the engine plate compromise the strength and cause problems?
