My buddies 03 Summit 800 sled starts no problem, runs great; just no gauges, lights or beeps.

I'd say stator first. Has he checked the fuses?
I dont recall for sure if the ZX has the same problem with the Relay as the later model Revs, but look for a square black relay above and behind the secondary clutch....at least thats where they are on the newer sleds. If they fail there will be no lights or gauges, assuming they use the same system. Napa part number AR 272 is a cheap replacement.
I would bet it's the relay also. I think mine did something similar when it went bad. On the ZX's it is located on the right hand side of the sled just behind the plastic piece that holds the pull start handle, on top of the foot well. Should be a couple of fuses there as well, probably wouldn't hurt to check them also, I think that one of them controls the gauges.
