I know I've seen some threads on gearing here, but wasn't sure if that would be the same on the '16 models since the track and drivers are different. I'm running a '15 KTM300 XC, last winter the gearing was deff way to low, now it has a fresh top end, Lectron 36mm, full pipe and the Star's head from Slaven's. We ride mostly at 2-3k ft in the U.P. of Michigan so i'm at pretty much full power, Looking for some input on better gearing from guys that run this set up at lower elevation, and we usually take at least one trip out west. The roll out i'm at is 12.5" with the 12/17 17/17. Thanks

Seems like the easiest would be to go with a 13 tooth front sprocket on your bike. I'm not familiar with that bike, but that seems like the cheapest easiest way--if it will fit. That should be significantly taller gearing.

You could also change the gearing in the chaincase. As long as yours is not an early model, the chaincase gears are cheap.

I ran 16/18 in the chaincase on my 2016 LT last year because I had to run a 14T countershaft sprocket. With a 13 the chain rubbed on the track.

If you wanted to gear up you could run 18/16 or 17/16 perhaps.

Yeah I tried to fit the 13 tooth on the motor half way through the year hoping the chain had stretched enough but wouldn't go with out a half link, which i didn't want to run. Was figuring i could do a 13 on the motor with a smaller sprocket on skid and then make up the rest with sprockets inside the TS case, wasn't sure if there a working set up out there with a better length roll out closer to 14-15" so i wasn't buying a bunch of sprockets and guessing.

Trans on bike starts out as a 26% differance down to 20% per gear, looking for maybe a 10% increase of track speed, which would be on average like half a gear. Using the TS gearing calculator a 20/18 in TS case would get me to 11% increase, does that work/make sense? Or am I over thinking this...

I have an Ultimate 300xc from mtndoo and I run a 13 on my 2015 LT but I am getting an 2017 ST this year and want to sort out going a bit quicker as well. Since we don't have the wider range like an xc-w we need to use gearing on the kits but my biggest concern is what the cost benefit is. If you can go faster then you may not be able to stay in the power band while shifting...right? I'd like to sort it out since I think there is a lot left to grab while using the 13tooth.

I would look more at your final drive ratio

14/17 with 17/17 in the gear case = 1.2143
13/17 = 1.3077
12/17 = 1.4167
12/17 with 16/18 in the case = 1.5938
12/17 with 18/16 in the case = 1.2593
13/17 with 16/18 in the case = 1.4712
13/17 with 18/16 in the case = 1.1624
14/17 with 16/18 in the case = 1.3661

Decide where you want to be. On my 450 last year 14/17 with 17/17 in the case was too tall. In 1st a lot and would bog the motor taking off in deep snow.

Dropping the chain case to 16/18 made a huge difference and was right where I wanted to be.

If its too low and you can't fit a 13T countershaft sprocket, just put 18/16 in the chain case and see what you think.

How was your track clearance? I ran 14.5" of track runout on my '13 kit and was spot on for the UP but my '16 kit is rubbing the track with a 12 and a 13 the chain wont connect even on a stretched chain.

Pretty sure 13 / 16 fits without half link. Getting ready to mount a sx kit so my chainlength issues will change

Ended up going with a 13-16 on the same length of chain, clears the track by less then an 1/8", I'll notch the chain groove in track deeper as chain lengthens. With the 13-16 over 17-17 in the case i'm at 14.3" roll out which should be perfect for low elevation. For mountain riding i'll be able to pull the top 17 in case and run a 16 in it's place on the same chain which gets me down to 13.5" roll out. Have just enough in adjuster, should be any easy swap for where ever I ride. Feel safer this way too since it is the same length chain as everyone else in the group.

Good information since I have close to the same gearing on my 2013 timbersled sx 12-16 17-17. So my 12-16 chain tension is just right for the sx with 1/2 inch of play which you need for skid moving up and down. I will just switch my chain case to 18-17 if possible and would that give me more top end and will stock chain in chaincase work. Thanks for any help.

A 17-16 in the case would get you close to the same roll out as the 18-17, i think. There was an excel sheet I found on here i have opened up at home

Would 18-17 fit in my older style 2013 metal case better than your newer style 16 case I wonder. But you are saying a top 17 with a 16 lower would work out to same overall ratio.

I was half link off of getting the 18 to work, was up against the 5/16" studs for the cover. Based off the excel sheet the 17-16 is less then an 1/8" longer in roll out vs the 18-17
